SE Solar Residential
What does this mean?
Mainly grid connected environments where…
• Unreliable, real connection for 2 ~ 4 hours per day
• Unstable, although available, voltage and/or frequency
vary and loads may be damaged or not work
…So BACKUP power makes sense. Could be through
backup generator or Energy Storage…
• Too Expensive or Peak Tariff timeframes and we want
to minimize consumption from grid
…So SELF-CONSUMPTION makes sense or…
… LOAD SHAVE makes sense
Generator based
Remote residences with Generators (diesel, gas, etc..)
are considered here because the minimization of costs of
fuel, its logistics and storage, in addition to their CO2
footprint, makes desirable to use alternative energy
resources
Or purely no AC source available (Off-Grid)

CONFIDENTIAL
Li-Ion & Advanced Batteries
New battery technologies with new advantages
are having higher presence in the market
▪ Higher energy density, charge cycles, life…

▪ In-built BMS that takes care of main safety issues

▪ Conext XW+ and SW have predefined battery settings
for different types: Flooded, Gel, AGM, Lithium &
Custom.
▪ These settings have predefined values but can be
adjusted based on battery manufacturer
recommendations (for XW+):

▪ Conext MPPTs use Custom type to work with Lithium.

Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 33

Operation with Lithium and other Advanced Batteries
TYPE 1 LEAD-ACID REPLACEMENT / OPEN LOOP (I)

▪ Lead-Acid Replacement are batteries designed to operate as drop-in replacement for lead-acid

▪ There is no necessity to interchange information with in-built BMS:

▪ No communication with BMS

▪ BMS has the whole responsibility for battery safe operation (if something fails it trips)
▪ For better estimation of SoC, recommended to use Conext Battery Monitor

▪ Operation of Conext devices are based on fixed settings:

▪ Always within safety tolerance ranges (conservative settings)

▪ Normally recommended by battery manufacturer
▪ We can study case by case

▪ Some examples: Simpliphy, Fortress, Saft, Blueplanet, GCL…

Operation with Lithium and other Advanced Batteries
TYPE 2 ADAPTIVE SETTINGS / CLOSED LOOP

▪ BMS communication with inverter: SoC, Voltage, Temperature, Max Charge current, Max Discharge
Current… that may change (based on operating conditions)

▪ The communication is used to dynamically update charging/discharging settings. In this case the
battery safe operation is guaranteed by both, BMS & inverter.

▪ There are different communication possibilities

▪ Xanbus (XW+ & XW Pro): Discover

▪ CAN (XW Pro + Conext Gateway): PYLONTECH, WECO, GCL
▪ Modbus (XW Pro + Conext Gateway): BYD

▪ Some examples: Discover, Pylontech(*), Weco(*) (in process), BYD (i.p.)…

(*) Also possible to work in open loop

ConextTM SW & XW+ Operation Modes
Backup
▪ CHARGE MODE the inverter acts as a load to charge the battery, to ensure there is enough energy reserve when grid fails
▪ INVERTER MODE if grid fails the inverter immediately switches to Invert Mode and continues to supply power to the loads. It
works as a power source CHARGE INVERTER

Support
▪ INVERTER MODE the inverter injects power into the AC bus by making its output voltage slightly higher than the AC bus
voltage (V1>V2>V3). This power can come from the battery or from DC coupled charge controller.
Sell
▪ INVERTER MODE when enabled, if batteries are above Grid Support Volts and load demand is being met, energy is
exported to the Grid (V1<V2>V3).

ConextTM SW & XW+ Applications
PriorityPower – prioritizes usage of power from solar charge controller before purchasing power from the utility.

ParallelPower – supplements AC Grid input helping to avoid peak utility charges (by Peak Load Shaving)

GenSupport – assists an AC Genset input supporting heavy loads

PowerCoupling – AC Coupling uses Active Frequency Shift to curtail the output of compatible PV inverters, maintaining the
balance between generation and consumption. Only possible when hybrid inverters work as grid forming (NO AC INPUT).

GridSell – allows to sell the excess of energy to the grid when allowed by utility (only XW+).

GenSupport AC PowerCoupling GridSell

Other functionalities, like loadshedding, are possible using Aux Port and other devices… just ask!

PriorityPower – DC COUPLED
Prioritizes consumption of solar over purchasing from utility, while maintaining the battery at a fixed voltage (VGS)

V1 V2 V3

• The inverter can control the amount of

power injected from DC by making fine
adjustments in its output voltage setpoint
• VGS ~ (VFLOAT of SCC)- 0.5V

• Power cannot flow to the grid since the

inverter monitors the grid current and • DC source or SCC can be of 3rd party
keeps its output voltage setpoint below
the grid voltage (V1>V2>V3)
• We cannot assure that the battery is
completely charged
• Starts once VGS is reached by battery

• Works until recharge voltage value is

reached

ParallelPower Peak Load Shave
Uses Battery power to supplement grid in order to reduce utility bills through Peak Load Shaving

We can control the maximum

case 6.74 Amps

Load Shave is active while

supplements the grid.

ConextTM SW & XW+ Grid Support Functions
ParallelPower Peak Load Shave
Some Timing settings to modulate the peak load shave based on timing premises…
• Load Shave Start: Sets the time of day that the Load Shave feature operates. This feature is suited for regions where local
utilities impose peak usage surcharges.

• Load Shave Stop: Sets the time of day that the load shave feature stops operating. If Load Shave is set to enabled and
Load Shave Start = Load Shave Stop are set to the same time, the system load shaves continuously.

• PLS DLY 2h: if enabled, PLS operation will be delayed by 2 hrs if the battery has not been in Float Stage for at least two
hours. This delay time is used to assure a more complete charge (from MPPT) prior to Load Shave.

Also interesting will be using Charger Block options (ChgBlockStart and

ChgBlockStop) to disable charge from Grid at high tariff charges or peak demand.
