ABSTRACT
The project on “The study of the use of medical grade adhesives in the medical device market
in India”, explains the role of adhesives in the medical devices, and it’s a Greenfield project
for 3M India.

Was briefed by the Company guide about medical grade adhesives as well as the types of
these adhesives available with the company and also briefed about how to handle customers
and their queries of their products.

Initially a list of customers were assigned for the purpose of identifying their requirement of
the type of medical adhesives they need for their products, based on prior interaction with
them on the mid of February in a medical fair organized by FICCI.

Methodology used for the purpose of generating leads was through google and justdial to find
list medical device manufacturers in Bangalore. Action plan for the next six weeks is email
and follow ups with medical device manufacturers and as well meetings.

Also, a list of prospective clients based in Bangalore had to be prepared and submitted to the
company guide. And was assigned to make to call to these corporate clients and inform them
about the medical adhesive for their devices.

Out of a list of 21 clients, 4 leads have been generated so far, and the 15 of the other clients
require an email before an appointment.

As per the report, prospective customers are identified in Bangalore and after which a client
base will be established and will later expand to other cities as well. The purpose of this
report is for 3M India Healthcare to have good network clients, initially in Bangalore and
later in large metropolitan cities in India.

1. PROJECT INTRODUCTION: THE STUDY OF USE OF
MEDICAL GRADE ADHESIVES IN THE MEDICAL
DEVICE MARKET IN INDIA

1.1 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

- To identify the medical devices manufacturers in India and find the target market
among the manufacturers to sell medical adhesives.
- To understand their business, the devices manufactured so that the medical grade
adhesives come into play. For example, medical grade adhesives do not come into
play in products such as catheters and stents since their devices are surgical and
intrusive in nature.
- To approach potential medical devices manufacturers to market the adhesives.
- Arranging time and date for the purpose of meeting the clients on the appointment
along with the 3M company guide and sales manager.
- Also to probe into the requirement through client interaction the requirement of the
types of adhesives for their product.

1.2 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

- This project helped in finding out various moment of truth that the customer
encountered while trying to reach the company, hence the company can use this
finding to extend its reach to prospective buyers
- The marketing managers can use this study to identify opportunities and develop
plans to promote its products for the future
- This study will help push Healthcare division of 3M India, beyond the boundaries of
Bangalore market to other metropolitan cities in India, through customer interaction,
after which an action plan can be made.

1.3 LIMITATIONS

- This a green-field project for 3M India and the project is mostly focussed on acquiring
clients in India
- There is project is small due to limited manpower
- The medical grade adhesives are not manufactured by 3M India, but imported from
3M USA, making the waiting period of client 2 weeks to acquire the product.
- The gestation period of this project is 10-12 months.

6
1.4 METHODOLOGY

The research is exploratory in nature, which requires both primary and secondary
research.

Primary Research: The purpose of this research to find answers to certain questions. It
involves surveys, questionnaires or even interviews with individuals or groups. The
information is mainly collected for the purpose of understanding their expectations of the
products.

This would help in validating findings from secondary sources and help in understanding
the topic much better.

Primary Research was conducted via telephonic and face to face interaction with the
clients.

Secondary Research

It involves summarization, collation or synthesis of existing research from journals or

research paper/reports. The purpose of this research is to understand the idea about the
domestic manufacturing in the medical device industry and the role of government in in
the growth of this industry.

2. INTRODUCTION TO THE MEDICAL DEVICE
INDUSTRY IN INDIA

2.1 ABOUT THE MEDICAL DEVICE MARKET IN INDIA

The medical device market in India is valued at USD 4.9 Billion, growing at a CAGR of
around 17% over the past 5 years. In the coming decade it experience double digit growth
at CAGR of 15%.

India is one the top 20 markets for medical devices in the world and is the 4th biggest
player in Asia, after Japan, China and South Korea. Increase in healthcare spending,
growth of insurance sector and the un-served population are the key driving forces for its
growth.

The industry is still fragmented; however it is still dominated by large Multi-National

Corporations. 70% of this sector is mostly driven by imports. Around 30% of the
domestically manufactured devices are exported, with consumables and disposables
having the largest share. There are around 800 medical device manufacturers in India,
with 70-80 of them having a turnover exceeding INR 500 million. The multi-national
companies dominate this market in high end products, especially in diagnostic equipment
and instruments, with domestic player having a noticeable presence in the low-priced,
high volume segments. Companies mainly, Biocon, Opto Circuits, Perfint and Skanray
have aggressively capitalized on opportunities and launched newer products. There
companies are mostly driven to create new markets.

Currently, this sector is highly unregulated, with only 14 products notified and regulated
as medical devices. The government is in the process of taking steps to strengthen the
regulatory and policy framework, infrastructure, R&D and skill development. This will
boost the industry in the long run.
