D1 conservation of energy to solve an engineering problem.
Newton’s Laws of Motion laid a foundation for humans to understand the science of movement
of different objects along a plain, on a circular path, on an inclined plain etc. Hence today we
are able to determine different parameters, say, about the motion of a train on rail track. We
are able to determine by calculation, when a train will arrive at a particular station, if know
the velocity through the journey, distance travelled etc.
The equations which are used to determine the different parameters of motion are called the
SUVAT equation. In this assessment, you will looking at the kinetic and dynamic parameters on
unknown systems and applying these equations.
You will then be looking at the D’ Alembert Principle of conservation of energy for solving an
engineering problem and determining the retarding force on free falling object, when it
impact a stationary object. This part of the assessment checks your depth of understanding
the subject of moving object and stationary objects.

A pile driver hammer of mass m1 kg falls freely through a distance of 6 m to strike a pile
of mass m2 kg and drives it L1 mm into the ground. The hammer does not rebound
when driving the pile. Determine the average resistance of the ground.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
To pass the assignment, your submission must comply with the following rules:
REQUIREMENTS P4 M2 D1
Where work has unclear methodology, significant crossing out or is muddled to such an
extent that in the lecturers’ opinion, the student does not understand, the submission will
be returned unmarked.
It is the student’s responsibility to demonstrate they understand the question and how to
solve it.
Lecturers reserve the right to challenge similar work by asking individuals to explain their
methods or carry out another assessment.
If the work is believed to be copied, then both students work will be returned and another
question will be set
