Application (Stage 1)
What should I be able to do (in another setting) ● I should be able to identify what a “portrait” is.

illusion of 3 dimensions on a 2-dimensional space).
● I should be able to define what a “highlight” is and what a “shadow” is.
● I should be able to recognize various “tones” (the amount of light in a picture including dark
tones, mid-tones, light tones, and highlights) as it applies to black & white pencil drawings.
● I should be able to apply the concept of “proportion” as a way to measure and determine the
accurate placement of facial features in a realistic-looking portrait.
● I should be able to identify the correct proportions of the head/face.

artist’s step-by-step instructions to create a line drawing of a face using correct proportions.
Lesson 2 - SWBAT: watch video #2 entitled How to Draw a Face using Light and Shade and
follow artist’s step-by-step instructions to shade previously drawn face using the range of 3
tones (plus highlights) introduced in video #2.
Lesson 3 - SWBAT: watch videos #3 - 5, then add details to the drawing of the face to
distinguish his/her previously shaded face as the face of Christ or the face of the Blessed
Mother.
