Doc Ref: EASIWiseStdUserGuide-170916-00
The EASIWise controller is designed to regulate hot water demand by turning a geysers element on and off at
various pre-set times as well as managing the water temperature settings. The controller also provides early
warning to potential geyser problems such as leak detection and element failure.

EASIWise has been designed to make installation quick and simple. For example, the existing geyser thermostat
stays in place, which makes it easy to revert back to normal geyser operation in case the controller has a fault,
special wago connectors are used for the connections and thin profile cables between the control unit and display
mean no large holes in ceilings when connecting up the manual setting and display unit.

Please note: Only qualified persons should install the EASIWise system. Installation must be in accordance with this
instruction manual and safety instructions and in compliance with relevant SANS standards.

In the event of any questions arising in regarding to the installation or operation of the unit, contact EASIWise
support centre 021 946-3424 or refer to website www.easiwise.co.za.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Installation of Geyser and Solar System
IMPORTANT - ALWAYS ISOLATE THE ELECTRICAL SUPPLY BEFORE COMMENCING INSTALLATION

MAINS LIVEin / NEUTin connections, LIVEout / NEUTout for Geyser.

Connections are made with Wago terminal blocks to the mains supply, geyser and siphon pump (if applicable)
which provide a simple means of connecting to the mains and geyser wires. Note: It is important to wire the
unit correctly! Please ensure connections are exactly per the below:

Connection Colour Connection Colour

MAINS In (Live) RED (2.5mm) GEYSER Out (Neutral) BLUE (2.5mm)
MAINS In (Neutral) BLACK (2.5mm) 230Vac Siphon pump (Live) WHITE (1mm)
GEYSER Out (Live) BROWN (2.5mm) 230Vac Siphon pump (Neut) YELLOW (1mm)

IMPORTANT

• The EARTH wire from the supply must be connected to the EARTH wire to the geyser. This can be done by
bypassing the unit and connecting the EARTH wires together or can be done inside the unit by using a single
Choc block connector.
• The Wago terminals can accommodate wire size from 0.4mm (solid) or 0.8mm
(stranded) to 4mm (solid or stranded) diameter. NOTE: the wire insulation material
must be cut back by at least 11mm on the wire before pushing it into the Wago
terminal block. In the event the pump wire is very thin, it is advisable to strip it back
at least 22mm, then fold it back on itself so the uninsulated part is at least 11mm and
then twist the wires together before inserting them into the Wago terminal. One can also use a single half of
the Wago terminal with both wires twisted together and inserted in one of the terminals.
• To connect the wires using the Wago terminals lift the orange lever of the unoccupied connector side and
slide the wire into the connector until it can go no further, then press the lever down and let it snap into
position. The connection is then complete.

Temperature Probe Installation Instructions
Installation of the geyser temperature probe can be done in the following ways:

1. Attaching the probe to the hot water outlet pipe as close as possible to the geyser, right up at where the pipe
leaves the geyser or using weatherproofing repair tape and solder heat to seal.
2. If the element has an extra pocket for a temperature probe (most solar geysers do) the temperature probe can
be inserted into this pocket.
3. Following the geyser manufacturers recommended placement for a heat pump temperature probe onto that
particular brand of geyser.

REFER TO THE FOLLOWING METHOD GUIDELINES

METHOD: Attach to hot water outlet pipe

First ensure you locate the hot water pipe which leaves the geyser, which should be the same
temperature as the water that will flow through to the hot tap. Note: The probe needs to be fitted as
close to the geyser and hot water as possible to minimise differential measurement errors.

→ Place the probe against the pipe with the temperature sensor (silver probe end) facing the
geyser (Figure 4-1).
→ Take the aluminium tape supplied and wrap this around the geyser pipe and temperature
sensor as many times as possible. (This helps with the transfer of heat and minimises
temperature errors)
→ This can now be wrapped with high temperature insulation tape to secure the assembly.
Wrap as much of the hot water pipe as possible with insulation cladding
NOTE: The pipe should now be completely wrapped with hot water pipe insulation cladding for up
to 0.5m to 1m from temperature probe. This will help in maintaining the temperature of the sensor
and limit the influence of the pipes cooling down at night resulting in a false geyser temperature
reading. The more insulation and higher quality of insulation the better and the more sustained
accurate temperature of the geyser will be achieved so please don’t skimp on this.
ALTERNATIVE METHOD
Use weatherproofing repair tape and place probe
on sticky side. Stick probe with tape to top part of
element flange on side. Use a little bit of heat from
a solder iron to secure tape and sensor to flange
without damaging the wire of the sensor.

METHOD: Use Extra Element Pocket

Newer geyser elements have an extra pocket located below the element.
Using this will give the best measurement accuracy and consistency. Locate the
extra pocket, looking at the geyser element termination below the thermostat. Place
the probe into this pocket and push it in until it can go no further. Lightly wedge a
piece of insulation cladding in between the hole and wire to stop the temperature
sensor from being accidently pulled out. Note: using this method means the geyser will undergo many more
off and on cycles as the temperature pocket heats up and cools down rapidly, so to heat up the same volume of
water there may be up to 25 off/on transitions compared to a single off/on using the hot water pipe option.

METHOD: Use geyser manufacturers recommended method.

Read the geyser manufacturers manual for the geyser and look for recommended heat pump sensor installation
position instructions. Follow the instructions on the method and position of a temperature sensor should a heat
pump be used with that type of geyser. If this method calls for attaching any mechanical temperature probe
support to the tank, then consult with EASIWise for any available options. NOTE: If no instructions found in the
manual follow the instructions for the most convenient/practical of the other three methods outlined above

IMPORTANT: When completing a solar installation do not use EX TEMP 2 THERM probe position. This probe
is reserved for future use and will interfere with normal operation of the solar control. If your controller’s main
roof geyser firmware is Version 5 and above then the EX TEMP 2 THERM probe can be used for monitoring by
fitting a probe to this position on the PCB.

INSTALLATION OF CONTROLLER FOR GEYSER AND THERMOSIPHON SOLAR SYSTEM
Please follow the connection details as per the Diagram. Disregard the connections for the 230VAC solar pump
system.

Mount the main power unit in an area away from moisture and electromagnetic fields, as close as
possible to the geyser.
Connect the Geyser Temperature probe to the Geyser as explained in Section “Temperature Probe
Installation Instructions”.
Connect LIVE IN and NEUTRAL IN from the Geyser Isolator switch to the appropriate terminals
marked LIVEin and NEUTin on the roof unit PCB.
Connect LIVEout and NEUTout to the geyser live and neutral points.
IMPORTANT
! Only geyser connections are allowed from these two points otherwise Earth Leakage feature will not
work and mains will ONLY be present when geyser relay is ON
! Installation of Solar Split pump 230V system - Only connect the mains feed for the solar pump from
the LIVEin and the NEUTin terminals as the LIVEout and NEUTout are switched and no voltage
will be present on these terminals if the geyser relay is switched OFF. Element fault detection will
not operate correctly if any other connections other than the geyser are connected to LIVEout /
NEUTout.
Adjust the geyser thermostat so it is in the region of about 10°C to 15°C more than
the user would like to heat the water in the geyser using mains electricity, so if the
user requires a maximum water temperature of 55°C then adjust the thermostat to at
least between 65°C and 70°C.
In the event of a geyser temperature sensor failure the geyser will revert to being
switched ON and under this condition the thermostat setting determines the geyser
temperature during this fault condition.
Connect the display connection cable to “LCD Connector”. This connector is supplied unterminated so
that only a 3mm hole needs to be drilled in the roof to pass the wires through. Once the wire is passed
through the roof, the connector, supplied separately and packaged loose inside the LCD display unit can
be carefully attached as described below.
Mount the Display in a place arranged with the customer and fix to the surface using double sided tape.
Connect the geyser temperature probe to the terminal marked GEYSER THERM (Geyser Thermistor)
using the WHITE sheathed temperature probe. Note: Although there is no electrical difference between
the RED and WHITE temperature probes, the colours are used for clarity during installation and fault
finding.
Solar Connection - Connect the solar collector temperature probe to the applicable point on the solar
geyser as outlined by the solar installers manual; or by attaching the probe to the hot water outlet pipe
from the solar geyser in a similar manner as outlined in this manual for connection to the hot water
outlet pipe of the geyser.
Once all the above steps have been performed the unit can be switched on at the geyser isolator switch
and testing should be performed to ensure the unit is operating correctly.
MANAGEMENT DISPLAY UNIT LCD CONNECTOR
The Management unit LCD to main roof unit cable is shipped without the LCD side cable
terminal pins inserted into the connector. This is to allow the installer to make a neat, small
3mm hole in the roof and feed the wires through the hole. Once the cable is pulled through the
hole in the ceiling, the connector is then connected to the display unit wires by inserting
each coloured wire into the correct position in the small plastic connector housing,
shipped in the LCD unit housing.

Once a pin has been inserted into the shell it is very difficult to remove it without
damaging the connector / terminal. Ensure that you are inserting the wires correctly.
Orientate the connector with the two ribs facing up and the wire entry points on the
left-hand side as displayed and in this position BLACK wire to bottom hole and RED wire to top hole. YELLOW
or WHITE or GREEN wire (depending on wire manufacturer) to the centre hole.

ELECTRIC GEYSER ONLY – SUPPRESSION OF SOLAR WARNINGS & FAULTS

(Note: This option refers to the LCD Management Unit of Version 4.0 and above)

The Easiwise controller supports both solar and geyser only. When doing an installation on an electric geyser
that is, where an installation does not require the solar temperature probes, the solar related warnings and faults
should be supressed from being displayed on the LCD.

To enable this first perform a RESET by simultaneously holding down the SELECT and BOOST buttons for a
long press (also see RESETTING UNIT).
As soon as the LCD resets and backlight turns off, hold and press the ENTER button until the LED turns on
green permanently – now release the ENTER button.
The first option displayed will be SoLP in the time / date window and On in the
temperature window. Select solar probe to be OFF by pressing the DOWN button or ON
by pressing the up button.

When the desired option has been selected, continue through the menu to the Earth
leakage option by pressing ENTER until the time / date window displays ErtL (earth
leakage). Again select this option by pressing the DOWN button to remove earth leakage
fault indication or UP button to enable earth leakage fault indication.
Once done press the ENTER key again and the LCD will return to normal operation.

FAULT CODES
All error codes except water leak and earth leakage are self-clearing, that is if the warning / fault condition
returns to normal, the error code will be removed from being displayed. Only when an error code persists for a
time does it mean there is a fault. When an error code is displayed for a short period, it does not necessarily
immediately mean there is a fault, for example, if FAULT 4 error code is displayed and you still have hot water it
means there was a possible use of water during the heating of the geyser and this was flagged as a FAULT as the
temperature did not reach the target value. Another example is that it is possible a geyser is operating normally
but may have earth leakage faults present. The fault does not mean your geyser is unusable. It means there
could possibly be a failure of the element in the very near future. For this reason, there is an option to supress
earth leakage faults. To enable this refer to the section GEYSER OPTION ONLY – NO SOLAR setting above.

If your geyser has been operational in your house for a few years and you fit an Easiwise do not be alarmed if
there are a few occasional warnings or faults which clear within a short time but do take action if they are
persistent and you are able to identify a physical fault.
