BADMINTON

 The objective of the game is simple, that is to hit the shuttle over the net so that it
lands in your opponent's court before it can be returned.

ACTIVITY 1: (1/2 crosswise sheet of paper): History of Badminton (story-making)

- Based on the pictures/information that will be shown, each of you must create a story based
on how they have interpreted the scenes.
- Do not use other references aside from the photos.

BASIC SKILL in PLAYING BADMINTON

1. Service
 Backhand- The action for the service is a push and not a hit, which gives added
control over the shuttle.
 Forehand- Hold your badminton racket with a relaxed basic grip. I recommend a
short grip for better control. Hold the shuttlecock with all your fingers gently
cradled around it.
For a forehand serve you must drop the shuttlecock into the path of the racket; this is
different from a backhand serve, where you hit from the hand.
2. SHOTS
 DROP SHOT- a shuttlecock softly hit, that it falls to the opponent’s forecourt.
 CLEAR SHOT- In this stroke, the contact of the shuttlecock is around the middle of
your racket head. The aim of the clear shot is to cause the shuttle to go up high in the
air and land at your opponent's back court.
 SMASH- is considered the most powerful shot in badminton and you can think of it
like a drive that is angled downwards. It is best used when the shuttlecock is high in
the air, so it can be angled downwards.
Equipment, facility, and other important terms in badminton
1. Ace – a good serve that the opponent was not able to hit
2. Bird- the shuttlecock
3. Clear – a shot deep into the opponent’s court
4. Drive – a forceful horizontal stroke that is straight and close to the net.
5. Drop shot- a shot hit softly to fall rapidly and close to the net in the opponent’s court
6. Fault- a violation of the playing rules
7. Hand-out – the loss of the serve
8. Let – a shuttlecock touches the top of the net and falls on the proper side of the
court.
9. Serve – to hit the bird to the opponent’s side in order to start a play
10. Slicing- hitting the shuttlecock with an angled racket face, causing it to travel in a
different direction as suggested by the body or arm movement.
11. Racket – the length is 26 inches; the weight is from 142 to 156 grams
12. Shuttlecock- the length is 9 centimeters; the weight is from 4.74 to 5.50 grams with
16 feathers fixed in the base
13. Net – the height is 5’1” on both ends (excluding the pole)
THE COURT

In singles, the court is played by the “long and narrow” rule, for service and throughout the
game
– i.e. the inner side line on the length of the court and the outer back line
– For play, the area from the short service line to the net is also included
In doubles, the court is played by the “short and wide” rule, for service
– i.e. the outer side line on the length of the court and the inner back line
– For the remainder of the rally, the full court area is included

MECHANICS OF THE GAME

1. Winning the Game
 21 pts= 1 set
 2 sets out of 3= Winner!!!
 if the scores are tied at 20-20, then it comes down to whichever player
manages to get two clear points ahead.
 If the points are still tied at 29-29, then the next point will decide the
winner of the set.

2. Procedure
 Winner in coin toss = chooses either to serve first or to play at one end of
the court.
 even number=serves from the right service court
 odd number= serves from the left service court
 first service = right side of the court to the diagonal service court.
 receiver commits a fault = 1 point for server and continue to serve
 Serving side commits a fault = serve shifts to the other side.
 Players change court at the end of each set.
 The winning player/pair serves first.
 If each of the players has one win each, a third game is played. When one
of the players reaches 11 points, they change court.
