The figure to the right shows a rigid body consisting of
two particles of mass m connected by a rod of length L
and negligible mass.

a) What is the rotational inertia I com about an axis

through the center of mass (com), perpendicular to
the rod as shown?

b) What is the rotational inertia I of the body about an

axis through the left end of the rod and parallel to the
first axis? See figure to the right.

c) Why is the rotational inertia GREATER in part "b" than in part "a?" Explain, please.

The figure below shows a thin, uniform rod of mass M and length L, on an x-axis with
the origin at the rod's center.

a) What is the rotational inertia of the rod about the perpendicular rotation axis through its center?

b) What is the rod's rotational inertia I about a new rotation axis that is perpendicular to the rod and
through the left end?

P3 BASIC TORQUES: IDENTIFYING THE MOMENT ARM (or LEVER ARM r )
The figure to the left shows an overhead view of a meter
stick that can pivot about the dot at the 20-cm position. All
five forces shown have the same magnitude.

a) Rank the forces according to the magnitude of the

torque each produces - greatest first, please.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
b) If the magnitude each force is 1.00  10 2 N and F2 and F4 point at 50.0 o below the meter stick,
what is the difference in torques created by the forces acting at the 40-cm location?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
c) Explain why F2 and F5 do not produce any torque.

P4 NEWTON’S 2nd LAW FOR ROTATION: A JUDO APPLICATION

Above we see two scenarios in which a judo fighter might find himself. In panel (a), the
fighter (to the right) "bends" his opponent (80 kg) forward to bring his center of mass to
his hip while in panel (b), he must throw his opponent from an upright, "unbent" position.

P5 NEWTON’S 2nd LAW, ROTATION, TORQUE, DISK
The figure to the right shows a uniform disk, with mass
M  2.5 kg and radius R  20 cm, mounted on a fixed
horizontal axle. A block with mass m  1.2 kg hangs from
a massless cord that is wrapped around the rim of the disk.
The mass is initially supported by an unseen hand so it is
not falling (nor rising).

Find the acceleration of the falling block, the angular acceleration

of the disk, and the tension in the cord. The cord DOES NOT slip,
and there is no friction at the axle (disk rotates smoothly).

P6 TWO DISKS
Disks A and B are identical and roll across a floor with equal speeds. Disk A reaches the bottom
of an incline and proceeds to roll up the incline to a maximum height h. Disk B also reaches
another, identical incline except that it is frictionless. Is the maximum height reached by disk B
greater than, less than, or equal to H ?

P7 CYLINDER ROLLING OFF A ROOF

A solid cylinder of radius 10 cm and mass 12 kg starts from rest
and rolls without slipping a distance L  6.0 cm down a roof that
is inclined at an angle   30 o.

a) What is the angular speed of the cylinder about its center

as it leaves the roof ?

P8 KINETIC ENERGY OF ROLLING: A BALL DOWN A RAMP

A uniform ball of mass M  6.00 kg and radius R rolls smoothly from rest down a ramp of angle
of inclination 30 o as shown below.
