Surface Area and Volume of a Sphere:

If r is the radius, and d is the diameter of a circle, then

(i) Surface area of a sphere

A surface = 4 πr 2

A surface = πd 2

(ii) Volume of a sphere

V sphere = 4

Example 1:

The diameter of a sphere is 13.5m. Find its surface area and volume.

Solution:
π
A surface = πd
2 V sphere = 6
d3

π
A surface 2 V sphere ( 13 .5 m )3
= π ( 13. 5m) = 6

A surface = 572. 56m

2 V sphere = 1288.25m

Example 2:

The Earth is approximately a sphere of radius 6.37 × 10 6 m. What are its surface
area and volume?

Solution:
4
A surface = 4 πr
2 V sphere = 3
πr 3

2
A surface = 4 π ( 6. 37×10 m )
6 V sphere =

3
π ( 6 . 37×10 m )
A surface 13 2
= 4 π ( 4 .1×10 m )
V sphere =

3
π ( 2 . 6×1020 m 3 )

A surface = 5.1×1014 m2 V sphere =

1. 1×10 m
Example 3:
1
How many leaden ball of a 4 cm in diameter can be cost out of metal of a ball
3cm in diameter supposing no waste.

Solution:
1
Here, diameter of leaden ball = 4 cm = d1

Diameter of metal ball = 3 cm = d2

π π
d d
V leaden ball = 6 1
3
V metal ball = 6 2
3

π 1 π
= (
6 4
cm)3 = 6
(3 cm)3

= 0 .0082cm 3 = 14 .1372cm 3

3
14 . 1372cm
Number of leadenballs
= 0. 0082 cm3

= 1724 .05

Therefore, 1724 leaden balls can be cost out of a metal ball.

Example 4:

How many square meter of copper will be required to cover a hemispherical

dome 30m in diameter? 14.1372 sq. m.

Solution:
The area of a hemisphere is half the area of a sphere. Thus,
π
A surface = 2
d2

π
A surface = 2
(30m )2

A surface = 1413.72m2

Therefore, 1413.72m2 will be required to cover a hemispherical dome.

Example 5:

A lead bar of length 12cm, width 6cm, and thickness 3cm is melted down and
made in four equal spherical bullets. Find the radius of each bullet.

Solution:

Volume of lead bar = lwh

= (12 cm)(6 cm)(3 cm)

= 216 cm3
3
216 cm
Volume of each spherical bullet = 4

= 54 cm3

V sphere = 4
3
πr 3
Deriving from , the formula to find the

3(V Sphere )

Radius of each spherical bullet =

3

3(54 cm3 )
= √
3

= 2.34 cm

Therefore, the radius of each bullet is 2.34 cm.
