TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN

The tower construction has been involved in using of steel formwork/shuttering techniques
(MIVAN formwork). The concrete mix used in the project comprises of M20,M25,M40, M65
where M20 is used in the grade slab concreting, M40 for the post tension slab and M65 for
footings and columns.

Various departments and brief introduction:

The site office has a wide spread of departments and
duties distributed among them. The various
departments include;

1. Site execution
2. QA/QC
3. Stores
4. Plant &Machinery

11
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

Site execution:
The general manage is at the top level management and ultimately heis the head ofall
departments.Next level of management has the to wer heads under the mare the tower
incharge/ senior engineers and followed by the engineers and supervisors.

Theyarethepeopleonwhomtheexecutioniscompletely dependent.Theyaretoberes- possible for

handling allkinds of issues and all.

QA/QC:
The site head Mr.G.SriniasaRao is the person with agreat knowledge about
reinforcement, concreteand brickwork.Proper planning and proper management of the
batching plant as well as the quality plans was the dutyof the tower QA/QC in-charge.

This particular department of the quality assurance and quality control Is the group which is
responsible for maintaining the quality in the project.

Stores:
To achieve the planned project duration, availability of materials plays an important role and
this is given as the responsibility of stores.

The working of stores department ensures that the required material is available on time and
to keep the work in progress.

Site Execution:

For me,asafresher, siteexecution and QA/QC profile has helped a lot to enhance the
knowledge about the construction techniques, challenges, and situations to be faced at site
and how to over come those. The education till graduation was technical with out any site
experience and so could not identify or find place in the actual implementation but the site
execution for the period of SUMMER INTERNSHIP has given me a chance to face the real field

12
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

situation and comply them with the lectures which could help me enhance my knowledge
further.

The site execution makes me find three main works to be performed on site. They
are;

1. Reinforcement
2. Shuttering/Formwork
3. Concreting

These three are found as major tasks which have a numberof intermediate
tasks.

1. Reinforcementfor columns
2. Preparingthe workingplatform
3. Providingsafetynets
4. Shutteringforcolumns
5. Concreting for columns
6. Fixingup ofroofpanels
7. Reinforcementfor slab
8. M.E.Pworks
9. Providingcut-outs
10. Levellingof slab panelsbeforeconcreting

13
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

11. Checking
12. Concreting
13. Curing
14. Deshuttering

Among all these above mentioned tasks the major time consuming is related to shuttering.
Every work has a connection with the shuttering work and so this is the lengthiest tasks in the
complete slab cycle.

About reinforcement:

The reinforcement is one among the two main components that brings strength to the
structure. The project have in use steel from the diameters varying from 8mmto 32mm. the
sequence involved with the reinforcement is:

1. The steel required is sorted out according to the diameters and quantities. This is
submitted to the planning department.

2.The planning department then prepares a purchase or derandsends to the

procurement department. Since the projectisa large scale project the main
ingredients of construction are procured by the head office/ cluster office.

3. They prepare and schedule of delivery to the company and send it so that they
receive the steel in that particular quantity. This is given according to they are
Capability, stock in the yard, and all other considerations of such.

4. Now,once the steel has reached the site,it is there sponsibility of the engineer or
The store person to handle the steel that is being unloaded from the traitor
5. As and when the steel is being unloaded,it should be sorted according to
the diameter and the requirement time.

6. The steel received is stored in the yard. For timely supply to the work place.
7. The BBS is calculated by the client’sengineer, which is approved by the client
Firm and then it is sent to the sub-contractor.

14
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

8. The sub-contractor then makes the cutting and bending appropriately as

per the given BBS
9. The supervisor then makes sure that the reinforcement is tied as per the drawings

About Shuttering:

Aluminum formwork:
1. This is a homogenous, monolithic structure formwork which can be used to fabricate
beam, slab and column at single go. It is found very useful when there is a typical floor plan
for most/complete part of the structure requiring more number of repetitions.
2. Thickness of panels is 4 mm.
3. Shape of elements can be customized as per requirement.

15
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

4. This is quicker and safer than the previous types of formwork, provides better finish and
durability, can sustain a pressure of 8T/sq.m despite being light weight and it does not
mandate a need for skilled labor.

Advantages:
The most important aspect of any successful structural construction is the form work system.
The advantages in this system are:

1. Speed:
Due to easiness of assembly and de-assembling, a faster slab cycle can be achieved.

2. Quality:
Due to the availability of required dimensions and smooth surfaces of shuttering plates, the
plasteringor remedial work after concrete casting is not done.

3. Safety:
Since the plates are lightweight the safetyis ensured.
4. Easy assembly:

16
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

No need of skilled labors since the assembling process is simple.

5. Durability:
It is capable of 100 repetitions and result in decreasing the cost
Compared to conventional formwork
Shuttering process:
The setting process has a particular sequence of work.
1. Structural line
2. Slab panel setup
a. Setup of slab corner
b. Setup of beam
c. Setup of slab
3. Completion of slab panel setup

De-shuttering process:
1. De-shuttering of joints and pins
2. De-shuttering of beams
3. De-shuttering of slab panel and slab corner

About concreting:
The various Plant &Machinery involved in the process of concreting are:
a. Batching plant
b. Transitmixer
c. Concrete Pump
d. Bucket & Tower crane

e. Material hoist

f. Compactor/ Vibrator

17
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

The concrete is initially mixed at the batching plant and these mixture is then loaded to the
trans mixer which completes the mixing process during the transportation from the plant to
the site. During this period the admixtures may be added to increase the initial setting time.

The concrete is lifted to the height above the ground level by the tower crane using bucket
system. The bucket used for this concreting has the capacity to accommodate 0.3cu.m of
concrete at a single lift.

The concreting is done at a height above the ground level and so it requires a pump to push
the concrete to elevated areas. The pump has iron pipes attached to it which allows concrete
to flow to the required point. The pipes are shifted and different bends are fixed to reach
every corner of the slab.

Curing:

The process of providing water to the concrete structure to ensurethe control of water
content in the concrete mixture is curing. This is doneby different ways where as generally
used methods are like using of mats and bunding system.

The concrete when is allowedforsetting,areactiontakesplacewherethecalciumoxide

Problems encountered:

Problems encountered during the execution phase has equally distributed to both execution
and the planning departments. The various problems faced leading to delayare:

1. Due to the high temperatures of summers, labor is not capable of performing to their

best.

2. Labor available on the site is not sufficient for the work to be carried out as planned.
3. Activities being repeated due to negligence of the labor.
4. Minute deviations in the earlier activity causing delay to the continuing sequence.
5. Labor is found in less numberpost-lunch leading to unproductivework.
6. Unavailabilityof plant and machinery.

QA/QCdepartment:

About reinforcement:
The first stage of construction which is the provision of reinforcement has few checks to be
performed at the completion of work. The checks may be few but very important as the
complete structuremayfallweak even overasingle column.

a) Theycheck for the development length provided

b) Over lapping that has to beprovided in the verticals
c) M i n i m u m spacing between the vertical overlaps

d) Natureof ties used

e) Spacing between the rebar’s as per specifications

About concrete:
Concrete as known is the mixture of cementations material, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate,
admixtures, and water inappropriate quantities.

Various mix designs are done in the quality lab and the best concrete with low price is
selected and is approved for concreting in the site

Before the concreting is done, there area few tests to be performed on the material. These
tests are:

a) Testson materials

b) Testson concrete

Testsonmaterials:To ensure proper strength of the concretethe materials election plays a

major role.Material shave their own properties which help concrete to attain the desired
strength. Various tests performed on the material are:

1. Fineness ofcement
2. Crushingvalue of aggregate
3. Elongation and flakiness of coarseaggregate

21
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

Various Tests on concrete:

1) Workabilitytest:The apparatus used for conducting the workability test is the slump
cone. This test helps to know the workable condition of the concrete mix and appropriately
maintain the w/c ratio.

SLUMPTEST:
It is to determine the workability of the concrete

2) Compression Test: To calculate the compression strength of concrete compression

strength of the concrete is evaluated by compression testing machine at 7 days and 28 days of
casting the concrete

3) Rebound hammer test: The surface hardness of concrete can be found out using this
and this test is general performed after the concrete is casted and is done in the site
Batching of materials done at quality lab

24
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

Slab Checking:

This concrete is a hardening mixture and gives the strength to the structural
construction. Once the process of concreting is completed there is no alternative to
check for fault sinearly stages of workand hence there are checks to be performed
before the concreting takes place.

The contractor’ steam working on the site ensures that there are no faults in
thestructural works.Theseare checked as per the required specifications and
drawings.The checking comprises of;

a) Thickness of slab:
b) Provision of cover blocks at
regularintervals

c) Alignment and dimensions

d) Conducting/MEP Works

e) Provision of cut-outs

f) Reinforcement of slab

g) Proper shuttering

h) Safetymeasuresas per HSE requirements

During de-shuttering:

Duringthe processof de-shuttering,the faults in the concreting are identified and

remedial measures are taken to prevent failure in the structural component. Usually
found faults are:

1. Identificationof cracks
2. Honeycomb structures

25
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

Checks performed by the third party after for beams, columns, slabs, etc. After they are
casted

26
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

Failures and remedial measures:

Identification of cracks:

Generally prescribed remedial measure for such a case according to the code book is making
of av-grooveall along the crack surface and filing it with the cementslurry. But in general
practice on field, the crack is closed by applying a layer of cement paste for a hugecrackand a
crack with less intensity is neglected. The common reason to find these cracks is
temperatur evariation.

Honeycomb structure:
Improper settlement of concrete or improper vibration leads to formation of honeycomb
structure. The remedial measure is that the honeycomb is treated with a cement slurry
mixture which is the combination of 1–cement,0.25–ggbs and water according to the
workability.

There is a checklist for post-concrete issued by the QA/QC department. This consist columns
of observations, location, conformance, correctiveaction, target date, close dateand the
status.

27
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

Stores department:

The complete storesrunon basic three steps, they are as follows

a) Material requisition
b) Inventory management
c) I n d e n t requisition

The main stage is the procurement process which is either known as the material
requisition:
a) The engineer or the in-chargegivesa MR (materialrequisition) to the stores about the
various material they are in need of.The stores department then checks the storesfor
the requested material and then sends for approval by the planning department.

b) Once the planning department gives an approval, the(materialrequisition)isprepared by

the stores department.

c)This EMR is received by the purchase department atthecluster level and then call for
offers from vendors which is usually called as aQuotation.

d) Then the various quoted forms are analyzed and are turn offer issent by the purchase
department.

e) The purchase order is then prepared and authorized atthecluster leve landa ccounts
department which is latersent to vendor.

f) The vendor than supplies the ordered material according to the contract document.
g) Once the material reaches the site, the stores department checks for the quality and
quantity.

h) The goods in ward note isprepared.

i) Then the inspection is done by the quality department to ensure the actual material
reached on site which is in a state of use and gives the accepted and rejected material
details.

j) The material receiptnote is prepared with the final details of the material In ward.

28
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

Material handling:
The stores at siteh avea major role in cost control but they donot have sufficient space to
maintain appropriate stores. The improper ventilation and in sufficient lighting lead to
difficulty in placing and identification of material. It is also difficult to reach the items placed at
corners because of the material stacked in the walkway.

The stores should have aproper ventilation system, walkway, fire fighting system, and location
chart and item tagsas pertheISO standards.

Steelyard:
The steel yard is located at the site and the bar bending area is located adjacent to the steel
Yard, so that based on the requisitions the steel bars and bents well in advanced

29
Summer internship report | SRM UNIVERSITY

BATCHING PLANT:
Basic Details ofBatchingPlant used onthe site:

Production Capacity: 60m3/hr.

Silos: 4cement silos of 100T capacityand 4ggbs silo of 100 T capacity.

Price: 2 crores (2 batching plants)

Working:
 Cement, ggbs are stored in two separate silos, which are passed to the mixing pan
through the screw conveyor based on the quantity requiredas per the mixdesign.
 Aggregates through the radial belt conveyor arepassed into loading chamber where
the loading of required amountof aggregateis done.
 The loaded aggregate is then released into the mixing panthrough another conveyor

Few solutions/ideas:

Analyzing the problems encountered during the execution phase as a part of the execution
team for the period of internship,we have few suggestions to over come the observed
situations.

1. Have defined and dedicated labor gangs according to the activities to be performed.
2. Arrange water facilities, electrical facility for a fan to provide air.
3. Arrange small meetings for the laborin-charges of various groups, try to find their
problems and solve them for a better output.

4. Make a better relationship between the labor gangs by organizing weekly or monthly
meetings for an hour or so.This would definitely bring out better out put in the case of
execution.

5. Have required plant and machinery so that the reisnodelay or wastage of time in
arrang ng for the required.

6. Avail one or two laborers on spare for complete scope of work to face any
Emergencyor help to the other gang of labors.
