Mr. Steven Moor

Executive Secretary
United Nations
302 East 23nd Street
New York, 11520, USA

Dear Steve Moor:

During the last years we have seen how technological advances have negatively impacted the
environment, since the activities we carry out often bring pollution in many ways, especially in the
form of waste and air pollution that end up affecting our natural resources. We can say that the
bigger, more populated and more developed the city is, more pollution it leaves.

For example, the increase in vehicular traffic and the burning of large masses of vegetation results
in polluted air, an increase in carbon dioxide that affects the increase in greenhouse gases and that
also threatens the health of the population.

But technology also brings positive things to the environment, such as recycling, the development
of new forms of energy and systems that allow us to be more friendly to the environment, of course,
all this has not yet been able to overcome the negative impact it represents. If we do not change the
usual technologies for cleaner technologies, we will end up with our most precious resources.

Global warming is considered as the increase in the average temperature of the earth, but according
to this, what is the impact of technology? I consider that the impact of technology on the
environment is very important, because the greater the population and the greater the
development of the countries, the greater the amount of greenhouse gases that will be produced.
For example: Increased energy production, agriculture, deforestation, the different uses of non-

renewable energy, industry, waste and the increase in the number of vehicles that produce carbon
dioxide, all of these are technological activities that are closely related to global warming.

If current trends continue, we will continue to increase levels of greenhouse gases and the average
temperature of the planet will continue to increase, as we have seen for the last decade, we will also
continue to destroy our natural resources and very soon we will see that there’s no way to regain
the balance of our planet.

Some ideas for solutions

To contribute to the environmental crisis, it’s necessary for governments to intervene,

implementing strict measures for large industries that emit harmful gases in large quantities.
Governments could also encourage the population to use eco-friendly plans where renewable
energy methods are implemented, such as economic incentives for those who install solar panels,
green roofs at home or perhaps install a water collection system rains.

Governments should gradually introduce the use of electric vehicles and support the population to
start using them.

From home, it’s necessary for the population to take important measures in each home, such as
saving water, saving energy, recycling the waste that we throw away at home.

I recommend that each house can plant a tree and thus help avoid deforestation. We must protect
our natural resources, especially fauna, flora, rivers and oceans, avoiding leaving waste that can end
up affecting our animals.

Finally, another eco-friendly measure is to have our vehicle in a good condition and if possible learn
to move more by bicycle or on foot. It’s very important to become aware that sustainable
development is a very important issue that we must include it in our daily lives, but for this we
need help from governments and the United Nations.

Sincerely,

Shirley Field
