Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Destination Culture: Tourism,

bangą XX a. pab. lėmė įvairios sociopolitinės priežastys, paskatinusios ge-
To pasėkoje XX a. paskutiniajame dešimtmetyje „kultūros pa-
veldo studijos“ itin išsiplėtojo ir šiandien jau siekia apimti vis daugiau aka-
deminių disciplinų bei kuo platesnę profesionalų ir suinteresuotų socialinių
grupių paletę.
Atsižvelgiant į tai, atsiranda poreikis susigaudyti esminėse šiuolaikinių
visuomenių santykio su praeitimi tendencijose. Norint suprasti dabarties
kultūros politikos, kurios dalimi galima laikyti ir paveldosaugą, aktualijas ne-
išvengiama tampa „globalizacijos“ sąvoka. Kas yra ir ką reiškia globalizacija
ekonomikoje, kultūroje, galiausiai, paveldosaugoje? Kokia šių prieštaringų
ir ne visai perregimų procesų kilmė, priežastys, kur link jie krypsta? Galiau-
Galima
paveldosaugos situaciją monografijoje siūloma žvelgti per XX a. pab. –
XXI a. pr. kultūroje vykstančių procesų – demokratizacijos, standartizacijos,
komercializacijos ir t.t. prizmę.
Knygą sudaro įvadas ir trys dalys, analizuojančios atitinkamai 1) paveldo
sampratos kaitą istorinės kultūros kontekste, 2) paveldosaugos kaip aka-
deminės disciplinos istorinę raidą bei nūdienes tendencijas ir 3) nūnai itin
reikšmingais tapusius kultūros vertybių interpretacijos klausimus.

Summary
Nowadays the items, pertaining to protection and handling of the natu-
ral and cultural heritage, are acknowledged by the majority of the coun-
tries of the world as the eminently topical ones and serve as an important
topic of the governmental-social debates. At the end of the XX-th century
this new wave of interest in the heritage was predetermined by various
social-political reasons, which served as an inducement to expand signifi-
cantly its concept, to strike up and to develop prolifically the international
cooperation while searching for the versatile criteria of protection and
handling of the natural and cultural heritage and for the best solutions of
the arising practical problems, pertaining to protection. As the result of it,
„the studies of the cultural heritage“ had been notably sprawling within
the last decade of the XX-th century; nowadays they seek for involvement
of more and more academic disciplines and for a wider palette of profes-
sionals and interested social groups.
With taking into consideration the above-stated, the demand to get a
handle on the essential tendencies of the relationship between the modern
societies and the past appears. The concept of „globalization“ becomes
inevitable, seeking for perception of topicalities of the nowadays cultural
policy, whereof the heritage protection can be acknowledged as its con-
stituent part. What is it and what does globalization mean in economics,
culture and, ultimately, in the heritage protection? What is the origin and
what are the causes of these controversial and incompletely noticeable
processes? Where do they tend? Eventually, how should all this be evalu-
ated and what should be done? An attempt to answer these complex ques-
tions became the principal goal of the book, which is offered to the reader.
Alternation of the concept of the cultural heritage and evolution of the
heritage protection as a discipline, its peculiarities and arising problems are
being analyzed herein. It can be stated that nowadays the heritage protec-
tion is not only the technical process of preservation or handling, which is
topical only for the experts, as people had been thinking not so long ago.
The phenomenon of the cultural heritage and, particularly, the so-called
„heritage industry“ turn into the practice, which involves wider and wider
layers of the society and, as it was already mentioned, takes the global for-
mat. Thus, the monograph suggests to look upon the nowadays situation
Cultural Heritage In The Global World 277
with the heritage protection via the prism of the processes, which had and
have been going on in culture since the end of the XX-th century - the be-
ginning of the XXI-st century, i.e. via the prism of democratization, stan-
dardization, commercialization, etc.
The book consists out of the preface and three chapters, which cor-
respondingly provide the analysis of 1) alternation of the concept of the
heritage in the context of historical culture; 2) historical evolution of the
heritage protection as an academic discipline and the modern tendencies
and 3) the items on interpretation of the cultural values, which nowadays
have turned into the particularly significant ones.
Aspirations of the modern heritage protection to perceive integrally
the natural and cultural, the tangible and intangible values and to solve in-
tegrally the problems of their protection and handling foster to devote the
larger attention to conveyance and upbringing of the social-cultural sig-
nificance of the heritage. With taking into consideration the above-stated,
the third chapter of the book provides the analysis of the peculiarities of
interpretation of the values of the natural and cultural landscapes, archeo-
logical, architectural-urban and intangible heritage, which is of significant
importance for the international heritage tourism management and for the
local communities.
The work is assigned for experts of the heritage protection and for
those, who study it, for culturologists, historians, anthropologists, sociolo-
gists, museologists, tourism experts and the people, who are interested
in the nowadays problems of protection of the cultural heritage and inter-
pretation.
