STA408: CONFIDENCE INTERVAL & HYPOTHESIS TESTING FOR A SINGLE

POPULATION MEAN

Test about µ : σ2 known, population normal

1. A consumer group suspects that a supermarket‘s 10-kg packet of rice actually weigh
less than 10 kg. The group took a random sample of 20 such packets and found that
the mean weight for the sample was 9.955 kg. The population follows a normal
distribution with the population standard deviation of 0.15 kg.
Find the 99% confidence interval for the mean weight of all the packet of rice.
Test at α = 0.01 whether the consumer group’s claim can be justified.

2. The manufacturer of a certain brand of auto batteries claims that the mean life of
these batteries is 45 months. A consumer protection agency that wants to check this
claim took a random sample of 24 such batteries and found that the mean life is
43.05 months. The lives of all such batteries have a normal distribution with the
population standard deviation of 4.5 months.
Find the 95% confidence interval for the mean weight of all the batteries.
Test at 5% level of significance whether the manufacturer’s claim is true.

3. A study claims that all adults spend an average of 14 hours or more on chores during
a weekend. A researcher wanted to check if this claim is true. A random sample of
200 adults taken by this researcher showed that these adults spend an average of
14.65 hours on chores during a weekend. The population standard deviation is
known to be 3.0 hours.
Find the 90% confidence interval for the mean time spend on chores during weekend
for all adults.
Test at 10% significance level whether the claim is true or not.

Test about µ : σ2 unknown, n ≤ 30 , population normal

1. A paint manufacturing company claims that the mean drying time for its paint is
shorter than 45 minutes. A random sample of 20 liters of paints selected from the
production line of this company showed that the mean drying time for this sample is
40.5 minutes with a standard deviation of 3 minutes. Assume that the drying times for
these paints have a normal distribution.
Construct the 99% confidence interval for the mean drying time of all paints.
At 1% level of significance, would you conclude that the company’s claim is true.

2. The manager of a restaurant claims that waiters working in all restaurants in his city
earn an average of RM 150 or less in tips per week A random sample of 25 waiters
selected from restaurants of this city yielded a mean of RM 139 in tips per week with
a standard deviation of RM 28. Assume that the weekly tips follow a normal
distribution.
Determine the 90% confidence interval for the mean earning of tips for all waiters.
Using α = 0.10, can you conclude that the managers claim is true?

3. A company claims that its low-fat yogurt cups contain, on average, at most 150
calories per cup. A consumer agency wanted to check whether this claim is true or
not. A random sample of 10 such cups produced the following data on calories:

147 159 153 146 144 161 163 153 143 158

Find the 95% confidence interval for the mean calories of all low-fat yogurt cups.
Test at 5% level of significance whether the company’s claim is true. Assume the
numbers of calories for such cups of yogurt have an approximately normal
distribution.
