Research Paper: “Delivering value in projects and project-
based business”

The main focus of this paper is on the delivery of value in projects and project-based business
and how research played its role in this regard. By delivering value, we mean the activities,
processes and strategies that organizations use to produce benefits at a reasonable cost.
Project-related research has played an important role in creating and delivering value in projects.
Value is perceived as the worth of the project. A moral and social perspective of values in
context of project is that treating values as abstract ideals and beliefs of what is good and right.
Project success does not merely mean goal achievement but it also counts the benefits achieved
compared to costs and value achieved over the project life cycle as compared to the original
value expectations of various stakeholders.
The value creation process is complex. Different viewpoints of multiple stakeholders need to be
taken into account and should be negotiated during the course of the project life cycle.
Researchers developed new knowledge about successful ways of framing, negotiating and
delivering value in complex and uncertain project-related contexts. Several papers were
published regarding this and only 10 papers were accepted. In these papers there are three main
themes that characterize the core aspect of delivering value
1- Value in context
2- Value creation & co-creation
3- Value delivery & capture

These ten contributions cover different levels of analysis: project, program, project-oriented
organization and project alliance indicating the broad application of value creation in project
settings. They also cover different phases: from the front end of a program to the execution phase
and finally to the solutions end-of-life phase, showing the relevance of value creation over the
project life-cycle. Diverse theoretical explanations were used to discuss and frame project value.
Some papers used a critical perspective, others connected projects with risk management,
stakeholder management, service-dominant logic and system dynamics built upon temporary
organizations to discuss the value creation process between temporary and permanent
organizations.
These contributions succeeded in developing ways of delivering value in complex projects. But
there are some phases which needs a little more research like the front-end and back-end phases
of project and the process view of the co-creating value between contractors, clients and other
stakeholders.
Forthcoming studies consider project-related values as ideals and include more theoretical
explanations; for example, concerning organizational identities and cultures, socialization and
sense-making.
