OUTLINES

3.1 Turning Process

3.2 Computer Aided Manufacturing : Mastercam Turning

BASIC THEORY

Turning Process

Turning is one of the most common of metal cutting operations. In turning, a workpiece
is rotated about its axis as single-point cutting tools are fed into it, shearing away unwanted
material and creating the desired part. Turning can occur on both external and internal surfaces
to produce an axially-symmetrical contoured part. The general-purpose engine lathe is the most
basic turning machine tool. As with all lathes, the two basic requirements for turning are a
means of holding the work while it rotates and a means of holding cutting tools and moving
them to the work.

Computer Aided Manufacturing : Mastercam Turning

Mastercam turning delivers comprehensive turning software with powerful toolpaths

and techniques. Mastercam lathe can create general turning, milling (c-axis), and misclellanous
operations to program the interioe core of a hose nozzle in Mastercam. The part requires basic
lathe operatios such as facing, roughing, and finishing as well as grooving and threading
toolpaths.

Facing
The tool is fed radially into the
1 rotating work on one end to
create a flat surface on the end.

Roughing A roughing operation is used to

remove large amounts of

Drilling Drilling can be performed on a

lathe by feeding the drill into the
3 rotating work along its axis.
Reaming can be performed in a
Drill
similar way.

Grooving Grooving is removing the

material in the location of an
5 indentation in the part. This
indentation can be square, OD. Groove

round or angular in the shape.

of the part. This operation is
sometimes referred to as parting.

Plunge Turn This toolpath creates cutting

strategies specific to a tool that

tool, and turn like a finish tool,
roughing and finishing all in one OD. Groove

Instead of feeding the tool along

a straight line parallel to the axis

follows a contour that is other OD. Rough right

than straight, thus creating a
contoured form in the turned
part.
