Working cast with removable dies
Class IV plasters

18/04/20 7
To allow accurate internal or fitting surface

Working cast:
Replica of the prepared teeth, ridges area,
and other parts of the dental arch

Die:
18/04/20 Positive reproduction of the prepared teeth 8
Requirements of good working cast:

1. It must reproduce both prepared and unprepared tooth surface

2. Unprepared teeth adjacent to the preparation must be free of voids
3. Surfaces of teeth involved anterior guidance and the occlusal
surfaces of all unprepared teeth must allow for precise articulation of
the opposing casts
4. All relevant soft tissues should be reproduced in the working cast
(edentulous spaces and residual ridge contours that will be involved
in the fixed partial dentures)

18/04/20 9
Requirements of good working dies:
1. It must reproduce the prepared tooth exactly
2. All surfaces must be accurately duplicated, and
no bubles or voids can be accepted
3. The unprepared tooth structure cervical to the
finish line should be easily discernible on the die
(0,5 – 1 mm)
4. Adequate access to the margin is imperative

18/04/20 10
Working cast with removable die:

1. The dies must return to their exact original positions

2. The dies must remain stable
3. The cast containing the dies must be easily mounted on the
articulator

Bite Registration

18/04/20 13
A bite registration should be easily and
precisely transferred to stone models without
rocking or flexing in order to reproduce an
accurate, and stable upper and lower jaw
relationship
→ Managing a bite relationship is one of
the most critical aspects of any
restorative dental procedure.

BITE REGISTRATION
MATERIAL CHOICE

• Wax
• Polyvinyl siloxane

Wax are easily distorted on removal from the mouth, in transit to the lab, or with
temperature changes

BITE REGISTRATION TECHNIQUE
1. Open bite technique - occlusal bite registration
2. Closed bite technique - buccal bite registration

Closed (buccal) bite registration

Open (occlusal) bite registration

18/04/20 17
Put the bite registration material onto the
prepared teeth only and have the patient close
onto it while you check the teeth on the
contralateral side.

Trim away any area where the registration was

in contact with soft tissue, or in contact with
anything other than tooth preparation or
opposing tooth

The trimmed bite registration should only cover

the occlusal or the incisal half of the prepared
tooth and the occlusal or incisal half of the
opposing tooth.

18/04/20 18
By taking the bite registration prior to the
impression, calipers can be used to
measure the amount of occlusal reduction

Planning the Shade Prescription

18/04/20 26
The shade guide consists of five groups of tabs organized by hue.

Groups:
100 = White
200 = Yellow
300 = Orange
400 = Gray
500 = Brown

The tabs are further organized by a numbering system to distinguish chroma and value.

10 = Least Chromatic, Highest Value

40 = Most chromatic, Lowest Value

It consists of 16 shade tabs arranged according to hue alphabetically:
A - Orange
B - Yellow
C - Yellow/Gray
D - Orange/Gray (Brown)

The tabs are further organized by value and chroma designated by a number that
suffixes the letter.
1 - Lease Chromatic, Highest Value
4 - Most Chromatic, Lowest Value

For example, A1 has a an orange Hue, a low Chroma and a High Value. Please see
