Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan
English for Academic and Professional Purposes

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to :
 Define and explain what academic writing is.
 Demonstrate how academic writing takes place.
 Appreciate the purpose of academic writing.

SUBJECT MATTER:
Topic: Definition of Academic Texts
Reference: English for Academic and Professional Purposes by Aida Rivera (pg. 10-11)
Materials: blue cartolina, whiteboard and activity sheets

LEARNING STRATEGIES:
A. Prayer/Greetings
B. Daily Routine
-Checking of attendance/ cleanliness and orderliness
C. Review of the past lesson
D. Motivation

The students will be divided into four groups, they will be given a piece of paper each
paper has a word and they are going to create their own song .

Academic Writing
 is a process that starts wuth posting a question, problematizing a concept ,
evaluating an opinion and ends answering the question or a questions posed clarifying
the problem, and / or arguing for a stand.
thinking ; you cannot just write anything that comes to your mind. You have to abide
by the set rules and practices in writing. You have to write in a language that is
appropriate and formal but not too pretentious.
You have to make sure that you can back up your statement with a strong and valid
evidence.
You also have to consider the knowledge and background of your audience.
GENERALIZATION:
The teacher will post a question on the board and the students will answer it correctly.

1. Every group will create a short story (3-5 sentences) and they are going to apply the
meaning of academic writing.
2. Every group will choose one representative to read their work.

EVALUATION:
Answer each of the following questions in one paragraph. Each paragraph is worth ten
points.
1. What is academis writing?
2. What is the importance of academic writing?
3. How is academic writing different from a letter
4. Why is academic writing equated to thinking?
5. If you use the first person point of view in writing academic papers, is it still
considered academic?

ASSIGNMENT:
Read page 12 and explain the meaning of critical reading.
