How we’re

living with two

COVID-19 cases
at home
in NYC
Spoiler alert:

We’re all ok

Fevers have mostly broken

Coughs still persist

Our “in-house” quarantines

have thus far worked
We live in NYC
it’s on “polite” COVID-19
quarantine lockdown

meaning it’s not illegal to go

outside for essentials

restaurants and bars are closed,

as are most stores

but at least where we live

people have been good about
staying inside except for
supplies and exercise
First my wife
came down
with a fever

Since she already had

the flu this year
(and we’re in NYC)

we quarantined her
in a bedroom

just to be safe…
I was the only one
allowed in the room

Food / medicine /
clean laundry
was brought in on trays

Anything coming out of the room

went into the garbage
or the dishwasher
or the washing machine
No, we didn’t use masks
to go in the room

We didn’t use hazmat suits

We didn’t use gloves

We didn’t seal the room up with

clear plastic wrap

But we were careful

I had worked on the
COVID-19 forecast model
(by location) for Cascend

so from the data I expected

a highly contagious virus
but with a low-ish death rate

of which roughly 25-30%

of people will catch
in most locations
So every time
I went in the room
I washed my hands
in hot water and soap

(yes, probably 50-60

times per day)

As I worked in a chemistry lab

in undergrad / grad school

keeping very clean zones

wasn’t a very different concept
Dr. Bruce Aylward
of the World Health Organization

notes that 90% of COVID-19

patients have a high fever
as an early symptom

and 70% have a dry, persistent cough

and shortness of breath

Sometimes headaches

Not often sneezing, stuffy nose,

sore throat, or aches/pains
Then several days later
as her fever broke somewhat

she started the qunitescential

COVID-19 deep dry cough
and shortness of breath

And that’s when

we knew what it was (is)

(we were glad we had

taken precautions)
Four days later
my oldest daughter
woke up with a fever

So we quickly put away or covered

anything we didn’t want
to scrub with bleach later

and quarantined her in her room

Now she, too, has

the deep dry cough
We haven’t been tested because
we’re not in any serious danger
(just a flu-like infection thus far)

If we need hospitalization,
we’ll request testing then

But for now,

let’s save the tests
for people that need them
(and there are definitely
people who need them)
It’s now day three
of having two people quarantined
(and day eight of quarantine)

My younger daughter is helping me

serve the infected patients

We try to keep ourselves from

becoming infected as well

And keeping up with

as much as we can of everything else

It’s demanding,
but at least eveyone is ok
Some suggestions:

COVID seems REALLY infectious,

so you MUST be careful

Quarantines definitely screw up

your normal routines but the alternative
is your entire family with COVID

I had a colleague tell me that we’re the

only people he knows with COVID
(hard to believe in NYC)

Keep engaged / entertained

or it will drive you crazy!
