IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing or ACTIVITY:REVIEW
presenting the
new lesson Note to the Teacher:
 Divide the class into four groups.
 Provide each group with worksheets
 Out of the worksheets, let each group express the
polynomial functions in its standard form.

Group 1
1. y = 7x + x4 – 3x3 – x2 +12
(expected answer: y = x4 – 3x3 – x2 + 7x + 12 )
2. f(x) = x(2x – 5)2(x + 7)
(expected answer: f(x) = 4x4 + 8x3 – 115x2 + 175x )
Group 2
1. y = 3x4 + 2x – 7x3 + 11 – x2
(expected answer: y = 3x4 – 7x3 – x2 + 2x + 11 )
2. f(x) = - x(x +6)(4x – 3)2
(expected answer: f(x) = - 16x4 – 72x3+ 135x2 – 36x)
Group 3
1. y = x4 - 9 + 5x – 2x2 + 4x3
(expected answer: y = x4 + 4x3 – 2x2 + 5x - 9 )
2. f(x) = 2x(2x – 3)(5x + 1)2
(expected answer: f(x)=100x4 – 110x3 – 56x2 – 6x )
Group 4
1. y = 4x3 – 5x + 2x2 – x4 + 6
(expected answer: y = – x4 + 4x3 + 2x2 – 5x + 6 )
2. f(x) = - 2x(5x -6)(2x – 7)2
(expected answer: f(x)= - 40x4+328x3 – 826x2+ 588x)

 Process all groups’ answers.

B. Establishing a
purpose for the Answer the following questions:
lesson
1.How did you find the activity?
(expectedanswer: answer may vary)
2.What do you think is the importance of expressing
polynomial functions in its standard form?
(expected answer: follows order)

Note: The terms of a polynomial may be written in any

order. However, if they are written in decreasing powers of
x, we say the polynomial function is in standard form.

DISCUSSIONS:

The degree of a polynomial fucntion is determined by the highest power

of its terms. The leading term is the term with the highest power, and its
coefficient is called the leading coefficient..

Examples:

1. The polynomial function f(x) = 5x3 + 2x2 +6 has 3 terms.

The highest power of its terms is 3.
Therefore, the degree of the polynomial function is 3.

2. The polynomial function g(x) = 4x2 + 2x3 – x4 + 3 has 4 terms.

The degree of the terms are 2, 3, 4, and 0, respectively.
Therefore, the degree of g(x) is 4.
3. The polynomial function h(x) = 6x4 + 2x3 + x2 – x + 4 has 5 terms.
The degree of the terms are 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0, respectively.
Therefore, the degree of h(x) is 4.
4. The polynomial function h(x) = 6x4 + 2x3 + x2 – x + 4 has 5 terms.
The degree of the terms are 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0, respectively.
Therefore, the degree of h(x) is 4.

A polynomial function is a function of the form

P(x) = anxn + an-1xn-1 + an-2xn-2 + … + a1x + a0, an ≠ 0,

where n is a nonnegative integer, a0, a1, …, an are real numbers called

coefficients, anxn is the leading term, an is the leading coefficient, and a0
is the constant term.
