UNIT 24: SOUND

EDITING
LAA
Reasons why you might edit
sound
To compress and summarize a sound recording to fit a
specific space

To eliminate flawed, repetitive, superfluous, uninteresting or

irrelevant material from a recorded clip

To enable recorded speech to remain legal

Ensure any inappropriate language is not in the edit

To change the chronological order of series of sound or

speech
To compress and summarize a sound
recording to fit a specific space

Sound can be compressed down in size to

be synchronized. An example of this is when the sound
fades out at the end of a tv/movie scene. The sound will
then continue when the next scene starts. This is an
example of how sound can be summarized into a
specific place. The example I have used is from Arrival where
the music fades in at the start of the video and fades out at
the end of it.

To eliminate flawed, repetitive, superfluous,
uninteresting or irrelevant material from a
recorded clip

During interviews where the interviewer is sometimes

removed, asking questions to make the participants answers flow
better and to make the interview more fluid this can also allow
the participants answers to become voice overs over other
videos.

To enable recorded speech to remain legal

Audio coming from the movie should not be too loud, as the audience/viewer
cannot here a certain loud sound. So, the audio should be safe for the audience to
listen too. So, to enable recorded speech to remain legal the audio has to be of
suitable condition for the audience or viewers can hear.

Ensure any inappropriate
language is not in the edit
Film makers or producers do this by bleeping swear words that is being
broadcasted on television. They allow these profound words to be exposed at
after 9pm on most channels as they know kids will not be watching these
specific shows. Overall, channels can be shown to kids only in the daytime as it
would include bleeping sound effects.
A great example of ensuring any inappropriate anguage is not edited in is in
Family guy, as they add bleeping sound effects when a swear word is exposed
on live tv.

To change the chronological order of series of
sound or speech
Sound is edited in to change the order of what really happened and to
manipulate the film to make the viewer feel a specfic way. It is seen as immoral
editing, as it does not give the viewer or audience a truthful, honest view of
what is being discussed. It can be very difficult to tell when something is
revealed not how it happens, because when someone's speaking is cut off
halfway through a paragraph, we don't know the full meaning of what they're
speaking, so they're not going to continue to clarify their point of view further.

To create an impact by adding sound effects and/or music between pieces of
recorded speech

◦ In paid in full, a slow and dramatic sound track which is relatively quiet is added in between the
character’s speech to symbolise the importance and seriousness of what he is saying
◦ The quietness of the sound track allows the audience to pay close attention to the message that
the character is trying to deliver

Editing 'fictional' sound

How might you edit sound in fictional work?

• Applying creative editing skills to produce dramatic sound

that is acceptable to the director
• Editing appropriate clips, links, background sound to
enhance the dramatic effect on the audience
• Apply necessary level of creative storytelling to facilitate
the narrative.
• Retaining ambient background to recordings and editing in
spot effects to match director's needs
• Editing relevant sound clips for use in transition between
scenes
• Editing voice actor dialogue for overdubbing to specific
scenes
Anthony Joshua

In the Anthony Joshua documentary, diagetic and non diagetic sound is included. The film maker has
included diagetic sound by enhancing the sound of Anthony joshua's boxing gloves as he is throwing a
barrage of punches. He has done this to present Anthony Joshua to the audience as an individual with
an abundance of power. The tense background music combined with the voiceovers of Anthony
Joshua and his trainers.
The narration is a vital part of the story telling so that the audience can follow Joshua's journey
accordingly. Having good quality of sound included in this will make it much easier for the audience
to follow the journey of Anthony Joshua
Life that glows

• In this program, the viewers can hear diegetic and non-diegetic sound. You can hear ambient noise
in the background while still hearing the essential narration from David Attenborough.
Furthermore, there is another layer of sound in this program and that is the calming background
music. This creates a sense of normality in the scenery being presented. The imagery and the
music also presents an environment of normality on nature life.
• Sound has been edited in various layers effectively to attract the audience into what is being
displayed in the program. The narration is a major part in this programme as it allows the auidence
to understand what is happenining on their screens as they watch.
Shaquille O’Neal documentary

◦ In this documentary focused on the life and illustrious career of Shaquille O’Neal, the music used
was exciting and bubbly. This was a representation of how Shaquille O’Neal was in his playing days.
The sound track is followed by numerous in game highlights and him picking up numerous awards

◦ Towards the end of the documentary, a slower sound track is used followed by numerous people
talking about his career. The sound track symbolises the end of it
Kick ass – Hit girl's final battle

1. In this scene, a gunshot sound effect is edited in to add to chaotic fierce battle that is happening.
This makes it much easier for the audience to hear the audio and understand the extreme
measure of the fact. Throughout out the scene, there is old western soundtrack playing in
background – therefore, making the audio much louder than normal as they want the audience
to hear the audio. This further adds to the tension of the fight. Theres many layers of sound in
this scene, such as sound effects, background music and non diagetic sound.

• Near the end of this in kick ass, there is orchestral/brass music which helps signify hope at the end
of the film using minor key. In addition, adding a rope sound effects so it is louder for the audience
to hear.

Pacific rim
• In this scene, a giant robot and some sort of creature are engaging in battle. The sound of metals
scraping and hitting each other is added in the show the mass of these characters as they walk
over broken buildings towards each other. The noise of each of them hitting against each other is
also exaggerated to allow the audience to visualise how powerful these characters that are
engaging in battle are.

• Towards the end of the scene, a freezing sound effect was added where one of the character’s tails
got frozen to help the audience better understand what is going on.This sound effect was quite
loud to ensure that the audience could hear.

Baby driver
◦ In the start of the scene, 3 of the characters prepare to commit a bank robbery. This is followed by
loud dramatic music, suggesting to the audience that they are about to pull off something they are
not supposed to. The driver then does awkward dance moves in the car along to the music,
possibly emphasising his boredom to the audience

◦ As we get to the middle of the scene, the pace starts to increase as the driver engages in a car
chase with an abundance of police officers. The increased pace and loudness if the sound track
allows the audience to further engage in what is taking place. It also allows the audience to hear as
well as see that something exciting is taking place
