For this project I was tasked with designing a 3D printable device capable of playing loud music.

In brainstorming I tried to design the product around my needs. Throughout my daily life I am
always in a rush and do not have much time to relax and listen to music. As a result, I usually
listen to music in the shower. Even though my iPhone is “water resistant,” water usually ends up
covering the sound ports during my shower sessions and muffling the audio. To add to the
problems, the iPhone also always ends up falling over into the tub because it is difficult to prop
up on the side. Therefore, I decided to create a device college students and young professionals
could use that would effectively allow them to play music in their bathrooms while taking a
shower. The objectives for this device are as followed:

1. Amplify the audio played from iPhone 7 speakers

2. Protect the iPhone’s speaker ports from water
3. Light, portable, and small in size

Knowing from experience that funnels are good sound amplifiers, I decided to base my model on
this idea. For my first design I aligned the funnel and iPhone holder vertically, one on top of the
other, as seen in figure 1 below:

Figure 1 Sound System (Design 1)

After some analysis it was determined this design is not well suited for its intended use due to the
following reasons:
1) The design has no way of propping the iPhone up. As a result, this makes it hard to
check or switch songs while in the shower without removing the device entirely.
2) If water enters the device through the funnel nothing prevents the water from entering
the speaker ports as well

Due to these concerns, an update was made to give the phone a more vertical posture. After
modifications were made, the following design was developed:

Figure 3 Sound System (Design 2) ; 2/2

In the second design the iPhone is allowed to be propped up vertically while in the shower,
making it easier for the user to change songs and harder for water to enter into the speaker, as it
needs to defy gravity to do so. After creating these design adjustments, it was then time to select
materials of the product. Since sound reverberates best off denser metals, aluminum was chosen
for the funnel. Then rubber was chosen for the holder since rubber does a better job conforming
to the iPhone’s body and keeping water out of the speakers. Material selection can be referenced
in the figure below:

All in all, the model does a good job meeting design requirements. Measurements used in the
build can be seen below in Figure 5. To allow usage with other devices slight alterations can be
made with the CAD dimensions.
