1. Prerequisites with all the task data and figures, notation
As is shown in Fig.1, the wing box is composed of 7 panels, subjected to the
shear force along y axis and the torsional moment around z axis. Number of each
panel is depicted in Fig.1.

Shear flow from shearing can be solved with equations of force equilibrium and
moment equilibrium.
To sum up, stresses from bending moment and shear flow from shearing and torque
are solved with the above steps, the next step is to get reasonable and convergent
thicknesses by iterating.
of panel.
At last, thicknesses needs to be optimized to satisfy fiber failure criteria and matrix
criteria

4. 1-st and following iteration calculations We have got 0-iteration thicknesses in Chapter3. With
these thicknesses, stiffness matrix can be gained by using eq for B11 and B33. For the first
iteration, the B matrixes of each panel are shown below.

6. Conclusion remarks
In this paper, the preliminary design of the composite wing-box cross section is managed. As is shown in
the chapters above, thicknesses of panels are gained, and failure criteria is met.
1. The 0-iteration step is carried out in Chapter3, which gives out an approximate thickness solution used
as the startup values.
2. The 1-st and the following iteration calculations are conducted as the same procedure. As an example,
the 1st iteration solution is listed as a reference.
3. After iteration steps, all the stresses don’t satisfy the failure criteria with fiber or matrix. In Chapter5,
these thicknesses are optimized to get a lower value of stresses, in order to meet those criteria.
4. And the scripts are shown in Appendix. This design procedure is adjusted in the upper-side to meet the
typical thickness of unidirectional lamina of the used material. And the obtained values are then might be
used for father design procedures.
