Chapter 6 Unit Plan

Unit Overview
Subject, Grade Level: Math, 5th grade
Title of Unit: Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators
Length of Unit: about 4 weeks
Rationale
Description of what you are teaching: I will be teaching students how to add and
subtractions that have different denominators. We will use number strips to begin adding and
subtracting the fractions, and then will begin to use common denominators and equivalent
fractions. The students will also learn to estimate fraction sums and differences. I will be
teaching the students to add and subtract mixed numbers. I will teach students renaming to
find the difference of mixed numbers. We will also be discussing problem solving and patterns
with fractions. At the end will be doing some algebra with properties of addition.
Description of what students will learn: The students will be learning everything they need
to know about addition and subtraction with unlike denominators. They will learn 3 methods
to add or subtract fractions: using fraction strips, estimating, and using common denominators.
They will work some with mixed numbers and adding them, and they will do some application
problem solving problems. Lastly they will go a little bit into algebra and see some sequences
with fractions.
Standards and Objectives
Standards:
Standard - CC.2.1.5.C.1-Use the understanding of equivalency to add and subtract fractions.

Eligible Content - M05.A-F.1.1.1 Add and subtract fractions (including mixed numbers) with
unlike denominators. (May include multiple methods and representations.) Example: 2/3 + 5/4
= 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12

Objectives:
Given 2 fractions or mixed numbers with unlike denominators, students will be able to add or
subtract the fractions with 80 percent accuracy.

Given 2 fractions with unlike denominators, students will be able to estimate the sum or
difference using benchmark numbers with 80 percent accuracy.

Given 2 denominators, students will be able to find common denominators and multiples of
the numbers with 80 percent accuracy.

Given the first few numbers of a sequence with fractions, students will be able to continue the
sequence with 80 percent accuracy.

Given a word problem containing fractions, students will be able to use the correct operations
to solve the problem with 80 percent accuracy.
Outline of Content
Outline of subject matter:
 6.1 and 6.2 will be skipped for the pd. 6 class since they don’t need fraction strips to
solve the addition and subtraction problems.
 6.3 deals with using estimation to figure out the sum and difference of fractions. To
estimate, students will use number lines and will round their fractions to the nearest
benchmark numbers.
 6.4 teaches students about common denominators and how to use multiples of each
number to find the common denominator of both numbers.
 6.5 finally gets to adding and subtracting fractions using least common denominators.
 The Mid-Chapter Check is a graded assignment that reviews everything students have
learned from 6.1-6.5.
 6.6 looks at how to add and subtract mixed numbers. Once again we will find a
common denominator and use that to add these numbers.
 6.7 has students renaming with subtraction. It highlights the importance of writing the
equivalent fractions before renaming them because renaming might not be needed in
all cases.
 6.8 looks at patterns in sequences with mixed numbers and fractions. Student will start
to see algebra by finding what is being added or subtracted in the arithmetic sequence.
 6.9 does practice with multistep word problems that contain adding or subtracting
fractions.
 6.10 uses properties of addition such as the associative and commutative property to
add or subtract fractions.

Brief Description of Daily Lesson Plan

Day 1: 6.3 Estimate Fraction Sums and Differences
 Lesson station: Tell students that we will be learning to estimate to add and subtract
fractions this unit. Students will learn to use the benchmark numbers 0, ½, and 1 to
change the fractions to and then finish the problem. Do one example with the class, and
then give each student some problems to complete on their own or with a partner.
When they have an understanding they can move on to the share and show section.
 Group Station: Show what you know section on page 349. Start test corrections when
finished.
 Tech Station: eSpark
Day 2: Common Denominators and Equivalent Fractions
 Lesson Station: Start out by checking and reviewing the homework from the night
before. Then move on to using multiples to find the least common denominator of the
2 fractions. Do a few examples with the class including a word problem and then have
them do some on their own.
 Group station: finish correcting tests and then students can work on a reinforcement
activity with common denominators.
 Tech station: eSpark
Day 3: Bingo Review
 There will be no stations this day. We will first review the homework from 6.4.
Students will get a blank bingo board and will fill it in with answers that I will have
written up on the board. Markers will be handed out to them along with scratch paper
and I will have decimal operations on the board for them to solve. If their answer is on
the board they can mark it off with a marker.
Day 4: Add and Subtract Fractions
 Lesson Station: I will have students work on adding and subtracting fractions using 2
different methods: multiplying the denominators to find a common denominator, and
finding the least common denominator of the 2 numbers. I will look at a couple
examples with the students, and then like always have them do some on their own. I
will use a differentiated instruction worksheet for the highest ability class to make it
slightly more challenging.
 Group Station: Fraction and other mixed review task cards
 Tech Station: eSpark
Day 5: Mid-Chapter Checkpoint
 There are no stations today. Review homework from the day before with students. Go
over anything important before beginning the mid chapter checkpoint. When students
finish they can go on the laptops for the remainder of class.
Day 6: Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers
 Lesson Station: I will give the students a refresher on mixed numbers and how they
work. We will start out by estimating the sum and then actually adding the fractions to
get an exact answer using common denominators. Once I go over a few examples with
the students, I will have them complete some addition and subtraction problems on
their own.
 Group Station: Fraction and other mixed review task cards
 Tech Station: Pac Man Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

on.htm
Day 7: Valentine’s Day Activity
 Students will be completing a valentine’s day activity with sweethearts. The period
will be shortened because of the valentine’s day party in the afternoon.
Day 8: Subtraction with Renaming
 Lesson Station: I will complete 6.7 with the students which will discuss renaming a
mixed number to be able to subtract. I will do a few problems with the students where
they will need to borrow from the whole number to make the fraction bigger so we can
do the subtraction. Students will then complete some on their own.
 Group Station: Cookie fraction activity

Fun-Activity-196280
 Tech Station: eSpark
Day 9: Algebra: Patterns with Fractions
 Lesson station: Students will be learning to find the pattern with a sequence of
fractions and being able to find what the rule would be. This is starting to get into
algebra and writing equations for arithmetic sequences. I will also go over some word
problems with the students and then release them to complete some on their own.
 Group station: Possible Jeopardy adding and subtracting fractions review

 Tech station: eSpark
Day 10: Problem Solving
 I will be showing students how to complete some complex problem solving problems
that relate to adding and subtracting fractions. I will help them to find what they are
looking to solve for in the problem, the information they will need to use, and how to
use that information to get the answer. I will do 2 examples with the students and then
have them try a few on their own.
 Group Station: Fractions group activity
Tech Station: Khan Academy
Day 11: Algebra- Use Properties of Addition
 Then I will go over the last section of the chapter (6.10) with the students. It spotlights
using properties to help add fractions that have unlike denominators. I will review the
properties again with the students, and then we will do a few examples up on the board.
I will then let students come up to the board and do some problems on their own. They
can then begin homework if there is time leftover.
 Group Station: Homework review from the night before. Typically students struggle
with the problem solving section of each chapter.
 Tech Station: eSpark
Day 12: Review
 Lesson Station: Review homework from the night before. Homework tonight will be
the odds. I will go over some challenging odd problems from the review, possibly #11.
 Group Station: work on review
 Tech Station: eSpark

Day 13: Review

 Lesson Station: Homework tonight will be the rest of the review. I will go over some
challenging even problems from the review with the students. Tell students test will
start next class.
 Group Station: work on review
 Tech Station: eSpark

Day 13: Test

 No stations, students will be testing the entire class
Day 15: Test
 No stations, students will be testing the entire class. If any students are finished they
can do eSpark on the laptops for the remainder of class.
Assessments and Evaluations
Assessment Prior to Unit:
 Show what you know section the students will do at the group station the day the unit
starts. It is an assessment or prior knowledge for the teacher to see where they are at
with fractions already.
Checks for Understanding During the Unit:
 Individual problems at the group station will be checked for understanding
 Mid-chapter check is graded like a quiz to check for understanding
 Exit tickets
 Homework will be occasionally collected to check
 Students will explain how to add and subtract fractions in video format using eSpark
 eSpark shows how students are doing on the unit
Summative Assessment (end of unit):
 Unit test that covers everything that the class has learned in the last 3+ weeks. The test
will be very similar to the review sheet the students were given a few days before the
test.
Considerations for Individual Students
The 5th grade at this school is ability grouped so the unit plan this is for is the period 6 class
which is of the highest ability. There are 2 students in the class who have gifted IEP’s who
would benefit from enrich activities. The GoMath curriculum that is used in this class contains
an enrich worksheet for each section. Those 2 students along with any other student who is
excelling will be able to complete the enrich worksheet instead of working on the share and
show right after the lesson in the lesson group and potentially the group station. This is a way
to differentiate instruction for the students who can be challenged more than the book
challenges them.
