The definition of Typography, according to Marriam-Webster is, “The style,

arrangement, or appearance of typeset matter; letterpress printing”. Typography is an important

set of visual communication due to the clarity of words that are being written and the clear

understanding of what style is being used. We use typography on a daily basis, this can be font or

style we choose to put on a picture, or the way we write something on a paper for a title.

Typography in short terms, is what brings text to life. When an audience feels an impactful

message with typography it means the designer picked the right way to design the words. A

creator uses several different trial and errors when attempting to pick the right typography style

for a visual.

How words are presented, is just as important to what those words are. Typography is a

special talent that designers spend years on mastering. This skill allows the designers to

understand how the audience will perceive the design of the words. If the typography is not

legible then the audience gets frustrated and won’t continue to look at the design of the visual.

Typography on a design needs to be aesthetically pleasing to its audience. How the font is

represented says a lot about what the company or design stands for. The typography of a design

allows a tone for the design itself; it creates a creative aspect of the design. According to Career

Foundry, “Good typography will establish a strong visual hierarchy, provide a graphic balance to

the website, and set the product’s overall tone”.

We spend hours critically thinking about the words we decide to put on a visual, while

others spend hours deciding, specifically, what font and design they want to use with those

words. When deciding on the design the main point the designers think about is how the

audience is going to respond to the design. There are several ways to describe why typography is

so important to a visual. Specifically, typography allows the audience to feel a connection to the

words that are placed on a visual. Engadgets describes 8 ways that typography is a priority in

design and why it is just as important to the words on the visual. These 8 reasons are: “(1) It is a

medium of communication, (2) it attracts the reader, (3) it holds the audience’s attention, (4) it

conveys a certain mood or feeling, (5) it establishes an information hierarchy, (6) it helps to

create harmony, (7) it reflects professionalism, and (8) it creates and builds recognition”.

These eight reasons show why typography is as important as the words on the screen. It

creates several outlets for the company and the design itself. Typography has been around for

centuries and only continues to grow in popularity and skill. Over the year’s typography has

gotten more and more advanced. This allows the designers and creators to explore options and

become unique with their typography style. When creating a typography style, they must choose

wisely, because this will create an overall tone for their message. For example, if one chooses the

wrong typography it can alter the perception of the message. If a designer uses a childish font on

an important and impactful message it may change the way

Typography is just as important as the words that are placed on the visual. When deciding

typography, a creator must choose wisely. Overtime typography has created a tone and unique

brand for companies across the world. People find more and more ways every day to expand

their typography. We use typography on a daily basis in an average lifestyle. We use it when we

decide fonts on our phone, designs on a picture, size of text, and several different ways. Each day

we find a unique way of expanding our knowledge on typography. Typography is an important

detail when creating a visual, it allows a unique aspect of an image.
