Genre: Poetry
Oilcloth Tablecloth is a lyric poem. The poem has rhythm and rhyme throughout. Every other line
ends with a rhyming word. An example is lines two, four, six, and eight ends with the words dry,
awry, cry, and dry. The word choices are fun and descriptive such as awry and sloshes. The imagery
from the poem allows the reader to picture what is happening without having to look at the picture.
An example is, “despite the many soda spills…. Baby starts to cry…. Someone sloshes the orange
juice…” The end pages continue from left to write. There is no break in the picture, which allows the
reader to see the people and table setting as it is described in the poem.
Architots is also a lyric poem that is includes vibrant illustrations to go with it. In the poem, the
ending words rhyme in pairs. For example, “blocks, shops, flats, laundromats, next, and architect.” It
is a fun word choice that the author calls the young children architots. The imagery from the poem
shows the reader that young architots are children who are practicing and have talent to become an
architect.
Explain how the book appeals to children, their interests, developmental levels, fun
illustrations etc. Give specific examples from the book:
In Oilcloth Tablecloth, the illustrations are bright and colorful. It shows a cat walking on the
table towards the spilled milk, one of the adults with a circle for a mouth as if she is saying,
“ahhhh,” and a kid at the end of the table with tears just pouring out of him. With emotional
development of children ages 7-11, children are aware that people can experience more than
one emotion at a time. As emotional understanding improves, responses to empathy
increase. In Oilcloth Tablecloth the illustrations provide many different emotions from upset,
sad, shock, and frustration.
Architots appeals to children because of the bright colors, the fact that it is talking about
children, and also that the children are playing with blocks. This poem would appeal to
children because children generally enjoy building with blocks. Whether it is building a city, a
house, a church, or any other building, blocks is an interactive fun activity. In the
illustrations, the girl placing the rectangle block looks studious with her glasses. The boy
looks as though he is concentrating.
