Mdk12 expectation 3.3: The student will analyze how traits are inherited and passed down from one
generation to the next.

Throughout this unit, we learned how traits are inherited from one generation to the next. What
are some real world applications for understanding genetics and inheritance? Include at least one
credible source in your answer along with a citation in MLA format. You must make your post
by the due date for initial posts and respond to 2 other posts by your classmates by the due date
for replies.

Student answers will vary, but some appropriate choices include agriculture, genetic testing, and
genetic diseases.

generation to the next.

Directions: Read the following texts carefully and answer the questions in complete sentences.
Answers should be at least 2 sentences long.

In watermelons, the genes for a green color and for short shape are dominant over their alleles
for striped color and long shape. Suppose a plant with long striped fruits crossed with a plant that
is heterozygous for both of these characters. (Use G/g for color and L/l for shape).

1. What would be the phenotypes of the offspring and the phenotype ratio? (4 points)
Green + short, green + long, striped + short, striped + long

In the fruit fly drosophila melanogaster, two recessive genes located on different chromosomes
produce vestigial wings and hairy body. The normal alleles, long wings and hairless body, are
dominant. Suppose a heterozygous normal male crossed with a vestigial winged heterozygous
hairy female. Use (G/g for wings and B/b for body)

3. What are the genotypes of the parents, and the possible gametes for each? (4 points)
Male: GgBb (GB, Gb, gB, gb)

Assignment With Report

Mdk12 indicator 3.5.3: The student will investigate how natural and man-made changes in environmental conditions
will affect individual organisms and the dynamics of populations

Introduction:

Throughout this course, we have learned how different factors (biotic and abiotic) can have an
effect on organisms.

For this lab, you and your lab group will design your own experiment on how environmental
conditions affect the growth of radish plants. You will choose one environmental condition to
test on 4 planter pots of radish seeds. Plants will be kept in the classroom and it is your
responsibility to care for them and record data during the first 10 minutes of class.

Some environmental conditions include:

• pH
• Temperature
• Amount of water
• Amount of sunlight
• Amount of nutrients

At the end of 3 weeks, you and your lab group will submit individual and separate lab reports
with the following sections:
• Title and Introduction
• Materials
• Procedure
• Results
• Conclusion

You must turn in your rough draft of your report (with peer edits) with your final draft. I
encourage you to collaborate with your group for the lab report, but your submission should
reflect independent thought.

Materials:

Each group will receive the following materials:

• 4 planter pots
• Miracle-Gro potting mix
• 12 Radish seeds
