relief for 160 people. Determine whether the manufacturer’s claim is legitimate at 1% level of
significance.
6. A test of the breaking strengths of 6 ropes manufactured by a company showed a mean breaking
strength of 3515 kg and a standard deviations of 60 kg, whereas the manufacturer claimed a
mean breaking strength of 3630 kg. Can we support the manufacturer’s claim at a level of
significance of 0.05.

x!
8. In the past the standard deviation of weights of certain 1135 gm. packages filled by a machine
was 7.1 grams. A random sample of 20 packages showed a standard deviation of 9.1 grams. Is
the apparent increase in variability significant at 0.05 level of significance?
9. In a large city A 20% of a random sample of 900 school boys had a slight physical defect. In
another city B 18.5% of a random sample of 1600 school boys had the same defect. Is the
difference between the proportions significant?
10. Machinist is making engine parts with arc diameters of 0.7 inch. A random sample of 10 parts
shows a mean diameters of 0.742 inch with a standard deviation of 0.040 inch. Compute the
statistic to test the work is meeting the specification.
11. The nicotine content in milligram of 2 samples of tobacco were found to be as follows:
Sample A 24 27 26 21 25
Sample B 27 30 28 31 22 36
Can it be said that these samples were from normal population with the same mean.
12. Five coins are tossed 320 times. The number of heads observed is given below:
Number of Heads 0 1 2 3 4 5
Frequency 15 45 85 95 60 20
13. Mechanical engineers testing a new arc welding technique, classified welds both with respect
to appearance and an X - ray inspection.
Appearance
Bad Normal Good
X - ray Bad 20 7 3
Normal 13 51 16
Good 7 12 21
14. Given a sample mean of 83, a sample standard deviation of 12.5 and a sample size of 22, test
the hypothesis that the value of the population mean is 70 against the alternative that it is
more than 70. Use that 0.025 significance level.
15. Twenty people were attacked by a disease and only 18 survived. Will you reject the hypothesis
that the survival rate, if attacked by this disease, is 85% in favour of the hypothesis that it is
more, at 5% level.
16. To determine whether there is a relationship between an employee’s performance in the com-
pany’s training program and his or her ultimate success in the job, the company takes a sample
of 400 cases and obtains the result in the following table.
Use 0.01 level of significance to test the null hypothesis that the performance in training program
and the success in the job are independent.
17. A random sample of 200 tins of coconut oil gave an average weight of 4.95 kgs. With a standard
deviation of 0.21 kg. Do we accept that the net weight is 5 kgs per tin at 5% level? Do we
accept that the Net weight is 5 kgs per tin at 1% level?
18. The following is the distribution of the hourly numbers of trucks arriving at a company’s
warehouse.
find the mean of the distribution and using its mean rounded to one decimal as the parameter
λ, fit a Poisson distribution. Test for goodness of fit at the level of significance α = 0.05.
19. A sample of 900 members has a mean 3.4 and standard deviation 261 cms. Is the sample from
a large population of mean 3.25 cms and standard deviation 2.61 cms?
Test whether the samples come from the same normal population at 5% level of significance

DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS
1. Analyse the variance in the Latin square of yields (in kgs) of paddy where P, Q, R, S denote
the different method of cultivation.
Examine whether the different methods of cultivation have given significantly different yields.
2. The table shows the yield of paddy in arbitrary units obtained form four different varieties
planted in five blocks where each block is divided into four plots. Test at 5% level whether the
yields vary significantly with
(i) soil differences
(ii) differences in type of paddy.
