Course Objective:

To train students to acquire language skills which will enable them…
 to acquire effective and appropriate communication skills
 to understand and acquire the interdependent skills of reading and communication; and
 to appreciate literature and develop an understanding of how it may contribute to personal growth
and advancement.

Learning outcome:
It is expected that by the end of this course students would excel the following attributes;

5 Writing Compose a paragraph.
Compose a paragraph to describe something (person, place and
object).
Form basic sentences with correct word order.
Combine simple sentences to make compound sentences.
Write complete sentences.
Use basic punctuation.
Write common words correctly.
Use basic terminology (lexis) appropriately.
Distinguish between informal/and formal communication
Write précis

antonyms, prefixes, association, dictionary work, appropriate

Understanding the simple, compound and complex senences and
expressing conditions
Using verbs correctly.
Identify basic parts of speech.

Pedagogy:
Following may be the main principles and techniques of pedagogy but are by no means the only way out.

Principles:
1. Creating a student-centred environment where the students are accountable for learning.
2. The accountability of the faculty would be mainly as a facilitator, communicator, moderator,
prompter and an assessor.
3. Use of collaborative approach with peer support and feedback process.
Techniques:
1. Pair and small group assignment
2. Brainstorming activities based on students’ area of interests
3. Inculcating critical thinking skills through discussions
4. Correlating topics or themes as much as possible according to students' background and culture.

Assessment Policy and Tools:


Students will be assessed on the following:

3. Speaking activities, such as group discussions, debates and role-play
4. Reading comprehensions
5. Class work
6. Class Participation
7. Listening Multimedia work
8. Midterm and Final exams

Course Content:
English language course, as part of undergraduate technical and professional programmes, stresses on the
functional use of the language which will enable the students to manage the career requirements imposed
upon them by their specific fields with ease. Hence emphasis is placed on enabling students to
communicate, both verbally as well as in writing. The course also aims at sharpening students’
understanding of the social functions of literature and its aesthetic appreciation.

Apart from the Language Lab activities, students will be given a hands-on training in the practical usage
of language by organizing mock-interviews, debates, group discussions, etc.

Communicative English – I

Course Contents:
Unit I
Functional Grammar: Sentence structure and kinds: simple, compound, and complex, clauses and
phrases. Active and Passive voice, Concord, Conditionals. (8 Hours)

Unit II
Requisites of Paragraph writing: Structure of Paragraph, Coherence & Unity, Development of
paragraph, Inductive order, Deductive order, Spatial order, Linear, Chronological orders, Compare &
contrast, Writing paragraphs on different topics. (8 Hours)

Unit III
Comprehension skills: Role of listening, Reading comprehension; Reasons for poor Comprehension,
Improving comprehension skills. (8 Hours)

Unit IV
Précis Writing: Techniques of Précis writing, writing a précis. (8 Hours)

Unit V
Vocabulary & Word Formation: Word formation, Prefix, Suffix, Compound words, Conversion,
Synonyms, Antonyms, Homophones and Homonyms, Idioms, One Word Substitution. (8 Hours)

*Practical (20 Hours)

Improving voice & speech: Art of public speaking, phonetic transcription and the international
phonetic alphabets, the syllable, word accent and stress, rhythm, intonation.
Presentation Strategies: Audience & Locale, organizing contents, preparing outlines. Audio-
Visual aids, Making PPTs, Body Language, Dressing sense, Self-awareness, Self- image, self
confidence.
Self introduction
Oral Presentation on self selected topic
