CASTIGLIONI
On the most beautiful end of nearby lake Como are situated two atrium houses stretching

along a 600 m2 surface (a preschool and a service building). They have been constructed

completely out of timber, visible throughout the structure, not only in the outer siding but

also on the interior walls.

 This structure was nominated

as the best architectural

project of 2007 in the

Leafawards competition.

The intentions of the investor were

clear: to improve the quality of
life of their employees through the

The city of Ljubljana decided to make

an extension to an existing kindergarten

which is located on a narrow strip of land

between two apartment complexes. The

extension was placed on a small piece of

land where there was hardly enough space

to build. However, the architect managed

to position the new building in a way that

the children had access to the wooden

terrace and on the playground.

 In Modena CMS built the “land of
colours” for their employees’ children,
a colourful preschool that stimulates
creativity and originality and creates
feelings of warmth and contentment,
which is for these youngsters, of special
importance. The social responsibility
award could not have been given to a
more suitable project.

Why “il paese dei colori” “land of colours”?

The CMS company decided upon the name “land of colours” based on an Italian fairy tale
with the title “il paese dei colori” by author Paola Marabutta, printed by the Lapis publishing
company. The book speaks of a “black” country of fog, grayness and clouds, which was
threatened by an enemy attack. In order to protect themselves from this threat, they used
living colours to “colour” the country. The grayness disappeared and from behind the clouds
the sun began to shine. In this way they hid the country from the enemy.

 “THE SCHOOL’S GOT WINGS”

A new extension to an existing

kindergarten was built in
record time on Via Moratti in
the community of Calcinaia.

Because of the excellent cooperation

between Riko Hiše and the community

of Calcinaia and their employees,

the project took just a few months

to complete. The new building was

designed into the smallest details,

offers the children comfort in a modern

and healthy environment. Because of

the rapid increase of the population

in recent years the community issued

an invitation to tender at which Riko

Hiše was chosen for the best offer for a

wooden building.

Riko Hiše offered the most energy

efficient, environmentally friendly

and earthquake safe building. The

kindergarten named “Isola dei colori”

(island of colors) was opened December

12th 2009.

Keeping in mind the importance of sustainable building, the community of Calcinaia in Northern Italy decided

to build a new school using a massive wood system. Among many competitive offers at the invitation to tender,

they were most impressed with the price and quality of one from Riko Hiše. The school is distinguished by

warmth on the inside and outside, as well as the colors and materials used. The warm colors interact, in the

interior as well as on the outer walls in massive wood and wooden ceiling.

“The preschool “Il paese dei colori” was

built in record time. The foundations were
laid on the 16th of February and on the
8th of September a festival kicked off the
grand opening of the new preschool. Within
two days the preschoolers entered their
new school for the first time. All together,
the actualization of this project took just 7
months.
The Chair of CMS Elena Salda commented:
“The intention of our company is also to
improve the quality of life for workers and
their families. This preschool attests to that
