Introduction
Arc-SWAT is a tool in ArcGIS software which is used for
watershed modellings.
The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is river basin
scale and continuous-time model
Used to predict the impact of land management practices on
water, sediment, and agricultural chemical yields in large,
complex watersheds with varying soils, land use, and
management conditions over long periods of time.
Utility of Arc- SWAT

Use for development of inflow –Outflow model

Estimating available water resource
Managing check Dam
Quantifying the impacts from land use changes on the
runoff
Modelling the long term impact of management practices
Algorithm
Calculation of runoff volume

SCS Curve number Equation is

S is the retention parameter and is calculated as

CN is calculated as
CN for Moisture conditions I and III is calculated by

Calculation of peak runoff rate

Calculation of Time of Concentration

Tconc = Time of concentration for a subbasin (hr)

tch =Time of concentration for channel flow (hr)
Tov = Time of concentration for overland flow (hr)
tov is calculated by

tch is calculated by

Calculation of peak flow

Data Requirement

 Digital Elevation Model (DEM) resolution 30m was downloaded from

SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov
 Soil map of the study area was collected Geological Survey of India.
 Land cover/Land use data is available in Bhuvan website for entire India as
Web Map Service (WMS). bhavan.nrsc.gov.in
 Meteorological data consisting of rainfall (mm), maximum and minimum
temperature (ºC), wind speed(m/s), relative humidity (%), from
waterbase.org website.
Model operation procedure
 Key procedures necessary for modeling using SWAT.
 Create SWAT project
 Delineate the designated watershed for modeling
 Define land use/soil/slope data grids
 Determine the distribution of HRUs based on the land use and soil data
 Define rainfall, temperature and other weather data
 Write the SWAT input files
 Edit the input files – if necessary
 Setup and run SWAT – requires information on simulation period, PET estimation
method and other options
 View SWAT Output

Conclusions

 The SWAT modelling for Poondi Watershed has been successfully done.

 Better understanding of the characteristics of watershed is possible from the

results of various parameters (annual average precipitation, evapotranspiration,
water yield).

 Simulation report helps the management people for taking actions regarding
watershed management.
