1. Description of Equipment

The Type DG185Y-04, 4 Pole Purged and Pressurized Synchronous Generator is continuously
rated at 20,000 kVA, 11kV, 3 phase, 50Hz, 1500 rev/min.

The generator comprises a fabricated steel generator and exciter casing employing a closed
internal cooling air circuit, which is cooled using a fabricated steel air to air heat exchanger
mounted above the stator housing. An internal fan is attached to both the drive and non-drive end
of the rotor for the circulation of the internal air around the windings and through the heat
exchanger.

The exciter unit is located at the non-drive end of the machine and incorporates a permanent
magnet generator (PMG). An earthing monitor for the rotor is included at the non-drive end, the
enclosure of which is open to the main generator housing.

Attached to the wall of the stator enclosure is a main terminal box for phase connections and
associated current transformers, which is also vented to the inside of the motor to allow the
passage of the purging air.

On the opposite side of the main housing is a set of junction boxes, also open to the interior of the
main housing, containing the neutral point connections and current transformers.

Internal and external earth facilities are provided at the main terminal box together with the main
cable termination facility.

Further external earth bonding facilities are available on the generator frame.

The rotor is supported by frame mounted sleeve bearings incorporating temperature and vibration
monitoring devices.

The generator assembly is designed to be purged and pressurized by a control system of the
Leakage Compensation Type, using air as the protective gas from a compressed air supply. The
assembly is therefore provided with an inlet for the pressurization and purging air which is
connected to internal air distribution pipework.

A combined pressure relief valve, flow measuring orifice and spark and particle barrier is provided
for the exit of the purging air.

Monitoring of the enclosure overpressure is provided by a measuring point at the non-drive end
adjacent to the internal cooling fan, connected back to the purge controls through metallic
pipework.

The free volume of the generator assembly is 36400 litres.

Three additional junction boxes are provided for terminations for the PT100 probes, Vibration
Monitors and Lube Oil pressure transmitters, located on the side on the main generator housing,
each comprising:

Junction boxes (432mm x 661mm) and (508 x 762mm) are provided on the neutral side
enclosure and the line side enclosure respectively, for the current transformer terminations.
These are constructed using the same certified components are the aforementioned junction
boxes.

All six junction boxes are provided with breather drain devices, Redapt type DP-E M25, coded Ex
e IIC Gb, certificate number IECEx SIR 08.0024U

Six PT100 Temperature Sensors, manufactured by Thermo Electric Instrumentation B.V.., types
XPS1, coded Ex e II T6, certificate number IECEx DEK 11.0002X.

Vibration monitoring equipment, manufactured by Bently Nevada Inc., comprising:

Four PROXPAC XL Proximity Transducer Assembly including 3300XL Proximitor, and 3300XL
Eddy Current Probe, two sets positioned at the drive end and two sets at the non-drive end.

Wiring is protected outside the main generator housing by means of flexible conduit with
appropriate termination glands, CMP Products Limited, Cable Glands Types PX, certificate
number IECEx SIR 13.0027X, with coding Ex e IIC Gb / Ex d IIC Gb.

The generator is cooled by means of an air-to-air cooler assembly mounted on the top of the
main generator housing. Cooling air from the surrounding environment is forced through the heat
exchanger by means of 3 fans, each fan driven by an electric motor, WEG Equipamentos
Eletricos S.A type W22 rated 7.5Kw 400V 3 ph. 50Hz, coding Ex nA IIC T3 Gc. The motors are
fitted with anti-condensation heaters, rated 40W 230V 1 ph. 50Hz.

The fans are of a non-sparking design and provided with aluminium impellors and aluminium
surround.

The purge and pressurization controls are automatic in operation and automatic in control of the
nominal enclosure pressure. An additional manually adjusted leakage compensation booster unit
is also provided.

2. Conditions of Certification

• The generator shall be purged for a period of 70 minutes at a flow rate of 3000 Nl/min
prior to operation.
• The appropriate use of the control signals provided by the purge controls is the
responsibility of the user.
• The use of any mechanism to override the purge controls is the responsibility of the
user.
