SECTION 15526

EXPANSION TANK

PART 1 - PRODUCTS

1.1 GENERAL

A. Each tank shall be piped and fitted in accordance with standard details.

B. External Air Separation Tank: External air separation tank shall be of steel, designed
for 345 KPa and constructed and tested in accordance with the standards outlined in
section 15020. The capacity of the separator shall not be less than indicated on the
drawings. Tank shall have tangential connections, flanged for sizes 65mm and larger.
Each unit shall have an internal perforated stainless steel air collection tube, for air
release to the system compression tank, and shall also have a galvanized steel system
strainer. Provide a blow down connection piped to nearest floor sink.

1.2 DIAPHRAGM TYPE COMPRESSION TANK

A. Furnish and install diaphragm compression tanks as shown on drawings,


specified herein and in accordance with the manufacturers installation instructions.

B. Tank: The compression tank shall be heavy gauge cold rolled steel, of welded
construction, rated for an operating pressure of not less than 1035 kPa at 115C.

C. Hung tanks are to be provided with integral fixed in place cradles.

D. Provide tanks with all required ports. Ports are to be threaded. Tank is to have
a port located on the bottom, not less than 25mm for draining.

E. Provide a flanged port, not less than 150mm for access and maintenance of
diaphragm.

F. Diaphragm: Diaphragm to be heavy duty Butyl, corrosion resistant, designed to


withstand operating pressure of 1035kPa at 115C without rupturing.

G. Diaphragm shall be one piece construction and shall be renewable.

H. Tank and supports are to be finished with 1 coat zinc chromate primer and 2 coats
epoxy enamel.

AIR SEPERATORS

Welded black steel; ASME constructed and labeled for minimum 862 kpa (125 psig)
water working pressure and 190 deg. C (375 deg F) operating temperature. Perforated
stainless steel air collector tube designed to direct release of air into rooms.
Tangential inlet and outlet connections; threaded connection for 50 mm and smaller;
flanged connections for 65mm (2 ½ inch) and larger; threaded blow-down connection;
sized as indicated for full system flow capacity.
Type: The air release tank shall be of the in-the-pip-line type with tangential openings
for water in and out. The inside shall be specifically designed to create a low velocity
vortex for the separation of free air from the water stream.
Size: The size of the air release tank shall be based on the line size of the pipe shown on
the drawings.
Shell: The shell shall be constructed of welded carbon steel; ASME constructed and
labeled for 8.78 kg/cm2 (125 psig) water working pressure and 190.6 C (375 F)
operating temperature.
Strainer: the tank shall be equipped with an internal steel strainer with perforations sized
for water flow. The strainer shall be installed in a location of assist in the separation of
air . the strainer shall be removable from the bottom by unbolting the steel bolt heads.
Drain: The tank shall be equipped with a bottom drain and this drain shall be piped to
the nearest open site drain. The drain line shall be equipped with a gate valve and a
union to facilitate the removal of the strainer.
