clues about what a word means. Today we are going to practice taking words apart and putting them together.”
C. Teacher Modeling
Teacher will introduce the article ( The history of Chocolate by, Sue Peterson). The teacher will then demonstrate
how to identify each part of the word. The will explain that Words are like sandwiches, a suffix is the part of the
word that goes before the root. It tells us about what the word means. The root is the middle part of the word (and
usually the longest) it is the base word and when we don't know a word we can look for the root to help us. The
suffix wraps everything up. It can also tell us about what a word means ( ly typically means its and adjective, ed
means it is past tense)
“ the word refreshment can be taken apart the top of the sandwich is the prefix re(meaning again), the middle part
is the root fresh, and the suffix is ment”
D. Guided Practice
The teacher will then give students multiple words (that she preselected) and ask them to find the root, prefix, and
suffix.

During the guided practice section the teacher will take note of the students ability to identify parts of the word.
F. Closure
As a closing activity, the teacher will give each student note cards that ( that will resemble a sandwich). The first set
will serve as the top part of the sandwich. This set of cards are the prefixes. Students will receive several (up to 5 )
not cards with prefixes that mean “Not” so they will have cards that say “un, dis,im, and non”
Next they will be given note cards with root words. Finally, they will be given note cards with suffixes such as ed,
ment, and ly. The students will be asked to compose a word sandwich. using the parts for example they may create
the word. “in-dependent-ly”.
