AND HEAT TRANSFER
This course provides a clear and detailed exposition of basic principles of thermodynamics
Objective(s)
and heat transfer. Applications of these concepts to various systems like cycles, processes.
1 LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS Total Hrs. 12
Systems-closed and open systems –properties, processes and cycles- equilibrium- work and heat transfers-first
law for a closed system and flow processes (Problems in closed system & steady flow processes only)-
enthalpy - second law –entropy- entropy change- reversibility ( Qualitative treatment only).
2 AIR COMPRESSORS AND AIR-STANDARD CYCLES Total Hrs. 12
Reciprocating air compressors: calculation of volumetric, isothermal and isentropic efficiencies- Introduction to
multi-stage compression and its advantages (descriptive treatment only).
Air standard cycles: Carnot cycle - Otto cycle - Diesel cycle - Brayton cycle - air standard efficiency - two stroke
and four stroke engines - SI, and CI engines (Working principle only).
3 VAPOUR POWER AND VAPOUR COMPRESSION CYCLES Total Hrs. 12
Properties of Steam - use of steam tables and charts – Basic Rankine cycle- Layout of thermal power plants-
Fire and water tube boilers, Schematic diagram of locomotive, Babcock Wilcox and Benson boilers.
Refrigerant properties - use of refrigerant tables and charts -Standard vapour compression refrigeration cycle
and COP calculation, effect of vapour super heating and liquid sub cooling on COP (descriptive treatment only)
– Layout of Domestic Refrigerators and air conditioner.
4 CONDUCTION HEAT TRANSFER Total Hrs. 12
Modes of heat transfer, Conduction – Fourier law, resistance concept, heat transfer across plane wall, hollow
cylinder, and hollow sphere, convection resistance, problems in simple and composite walls, 1-D steady state
heat conduction with heat generation, simple problems, Different type of fins, simple problems.
5 CONVECTION AND RADIATION HEAT TRANSFER Total Hrs. 12
Convection - free convection and forced convection- empirical relations- problems in flow over vertical plates,
flow across cylinder, flow through circular pipes, Natural convective heat transfer over vertical plates and
horizontal cylinder. Radiation - Black body and grey body concept, problems using radiation exchanges
between two grey bodies – methods of cooling of machines/devices.
