Sadd ad-Dharai’ is one of the secondary sources of syariah law. Sadd means blocking and ad-
Dharai’ means of obtaining a certain end. Thus, technically, Sadd ad-Dharai’ means blocking the
means to an expected and which is likely to materialise if the means towards it is not obstructed.
Al qarafi defined Sadd ad-Dharai’ as closing down the means of evil in order to prevent it.
The proponent of Sadd ad-Dharai’ has been quoted in several verses of alquran and also
assunnah. In surah Al-An’am: 108, Allah prevented the muslim from cursing the object that is
worshipped by the non-believers so to block the means of them to curse Allah which is an act of
evil. All steps should be taken to block any kind of evil that might occur.
In Malaysia, Sadd ad-Dharai’ has been used in making law. As example ENAKMEN KANUN
JENAYAH SYARIAH 1985 in Kelantan, provides in section 9 where it is prohibited for the
muslims to free mixing between the opposite six.the has put limit and some ethics that must be
followed so as to prevent a person from indulging into greter evil such as adultery and sexual
misconduct.
There are 4 categories of Sadd ad-Dharai’ which are definitely leads to evil as an example,
digging a deep pit next to the entrance door to a public place which is not lit at night. Anyone
who enters the door is most likely to fall into it.. Secondly, which most likely to lead to evil and
is rarely expected lead to a benefit such as selling grapes to wine maker. Thirdly, which
frequently leads to evil but there is no certainty such as the sale which used as a mean to procure
usury. Lastly, which is rarely expected to lead to evil and is most likely to lead to a benefit such
as the usage of the internet.

Application
In this situation, in controlling the usage of multimedia, as a medium to insult prophet
Muhammad, the principle in Sadd ad-Dharai’ that would be applicable is the last type which is is
rarely expected to lead to evil and is most likely to lead to a benefit. This is because multimedia
had been use widely all around the world for a greater benefit such as being used to conduct
presentation and online classesm a medium to spread kindness, and such issue such as insulting
prophet Muhammad is rarely happened. However, those issue cannot be taken lightly, law can be
implemented in order to prevent this kind of evil from happening. Similarly, in surah An-
An’am, allah prevented the muslim from from from cursing the object that is worshipped by the
non-believers so to block the means of them to curse Allah. Therefore the last principle in Sadd
ad-Dharai’ is the most suitable in controlling the usage of multimedia as it rarely expected to
lead to evil and most likely to lead to benefits
