CFU ON DIVERSITY AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN OB

CASE 1

List 4 learnings from our discussion on diversity which you find is applicable to the case
above.

Justin experienced discrimination in the form of mockery and insult. As in

all interactions with people, there must be respect and courtesy. The U.S. Center for
Disease Control and Prevention recommends that „people first language‟ be used “to
speak appropriately and respectfully about an individual with disability.” It emphasizes
the person first, not their disability.

Attracting, Selecting, Developing, and Retaining Diverse Employees. Before

considering how to manage a diverse workforce, organizations first have to have a
diverse workforce to manage. As the less diverse an organization is, the more difficult it
is to attract diversity to that organization. Recruiters should actively seek to recruit
diverse people. They should not rely on diverse candidates to find them. There are
many reasons for this. Many diverse candidates may not apply for a job at an
organization based on past experiences of (perceived) discrimination at other
organizations, perception about the organization and the candidate's perceived lack of
chances of getting hired and so forth.

Tailor-fit the job to match the PWD’s disabilities and providing necessary
equipment, the lack of qualification of PWDs may be addressed through job readiness
programs that offer individualized training tailor-fit to suit someone like Justin. The
programs aim to develop work hygiene, behaviours, and skills necessary for career
pursuits.

As managers, we have responsibilities towards reducing inequality.

Creating working conditions where everyone has equal chances to develop a career
commensurate with their aspirations and expectations. To grow in a positive direction as
a society we need to rethink the way we communicate about PWDs. Each of us is
struggling in different ways, some physical, others mental. It‟s all part of the human
condition.

How did Justin and CDC respond to how his diversity affects the organization?

CDC is committed to creating a diverse work environment that fosters

appreciation and mutual respect for each and every employee. Justin‟s colleagues
put an emphasis on making him feel comfortable and respected as a member of a
diverse and productive workforce. They welcomed Justin‟s diversity, positively
contributing to his overall health.

As for management, ensuring diversity helps create a positive work

environment where all employees have the opportunity to reach their potential
and maximize their contributions to CDC′s mission. Justin was equipped to improve
his health by providing him aerobic activities, stretches and walks during his working
hours, and use of his desk cycle. He was also encouraged to participate in walking
meetings, which he believes leads to more creative and productive meetings.

CDC is proud to support National Disability Employment Awareness Month

every October. The awareness month aims to educate about disability employment
issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America‟s workers with
disabilities.

CASE 2

Upon reading the above article list down at least 3 responsibilities that are applicable
from slide 17.

1.) We have responsibilities towards our community.

2.) We have responsibilities towards individuals.
3.) We have responsibilities towards society.

Discuss each of the three responsibilities briefly.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) means that companies take responsibility

for the impact of their business activities. It is a question of finding the right balance
between the three P‟s: People (individuals, community, society), Planet (environment),
and Profit.

We have responsibilities towards our community. Over the years, the

company has developed a reputation in the town for taking care of its employees and
being a responsible company. Local jobs are ideal because they reduce the amount of
traveling and commuting employees need to do to get to work. By providing local jobs,
the area‟s unemployment rate can decrease, producing great numbers for the local
economy.

We have responsibilities towards individuals. The by-product has been

considered harmless but some people who live near the river have reported illnesses. It
is the responsibility of the company to ensure safety of the individuals living near the
manufacturing plant by having a waste management facility.

We have responsibilities towards society. The by-product of the

manufacturing process does not currently violate any anti-pollution laws. Ethical
responsibilities include the behaviour of the firm that is expected by the society but not
codified in law. The business should always be aware of its activities and how do they
affect the environment and the society. It is the moral and ethical responsibility of every
human and every business.
