CSD FIELD TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION

Subject: Exhaust Diffuser Upgrade FTI No: 0254

Applicable: All F-technology gas turbines

shipped before July 1, 1997

1. Purpose

Advise on the availability of an exhaust diffuser upgrade that reduces the

potential for liquid leakage during certain situations

2. Background/Discussion

Recent field experience on F-technology units indicates that, during certain

situations, there is a potential for liquid leakage through the bolted joints at the
bottom vertical centreline of the exhaust diffuser. Liquid leakage can occur
during false start situations when on liquid fuel or during off-line water wash as
the liquid flows through the exhaust diffuser to the water wash/false start drain.

The liquid may accumulate in the external insulation blanket and, in the case of
liquid fuel, raise the possibility for a fire or smoking in the insulation. Water from
the off-line water washes may cause deterioration of the ceramic fibre in the
external insulation blanket.

To reduce the potential for liquid leakage described above, GE has developed a
modification that incorporates a metal flow shield across the bottom vertical
bolted joint of the exhaust diffuser. This upgrade is being incorporated into
current production units.
