We can hardly conceive of such a thing happening in modern times —it seems more reminiscent of former centuries; it calls to mind the heroic village of Eyam in Derbyshire who cut themselves off from others in order to contain the plague, the Black Death. Our Bishop of Norwich Graham Usher said: “life feels so strange at present. Things are out of kilter, including our emotions, and there is sorrow that our church buildings are closed for public worship and private prayer. Yet the Church is the people of God and we are being ‘church’ right now, just in a different way.” In this most challenging of times there are opportunities too —for creatively re- imagining what shared worship really means to us. Video conferencing software such as Zoom is taking on a new relevance as church communities use it for worship, moving church to cyberspace, the Internet, becoming ‘virtual churches'- but no less meaningful to those computer-sawy people who can engage with the technology. Of course, not everyone can, so even more novel ways must be found to prevent these people from being excluded. In this season of Easter let us grasp afresh the unquenchable hope that Jesus Christ gives us ~especially in this Easter unlike any other. The words of Her Majesty the Queen resonate with us, that we need the hope that Easter gives us more than ever: “We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again.” Come Creator Spirit, source of life, sustain us when our hearts are heavy and our wells have run dry, for you are the Father's gift to us, with him who is our living water, Jesus Christ our Lord. This has, I’m afraid, limited the scope and range of my experiences to relate to you, except those happening here at home. Today is Easter Bank Holiday Monday and after several days of warm Spring sunshine, we are cursed with a cool, northerly breeze and 100% cloud cover. | remember plenty of these in days gone by when, as a family, we all went to the Fakenham Races. The fine warm days of Spring were outnumbered by days spent shivering in the car, often in snow showers. Such is our weather living close to the North Sea. | have always treated myself to a range of sports programmes available on satellite television. As all current sports have ceased during this lockdown, a waste of money was apparent. Not at all, old matches of closely played tournaments are being continuously viewed and | have been immensely entertained. | expect you have alll noticed the change in rainfall recently. Gone are the deluges of January and February. March recorded barely a third of the rainfall (21mm) of these two months, and now halfway through April we have experienced but a trace (0.5mm). This is beginning to have its effect on our garden. Already plants in pots are having to be watered. Should this continue, a summer such as 1976 could be experienced. To those of you lucky enough to be too young to remember that summer, harvest was over by the end of July and food such as potatoes rocketed in price. My new potatoes have already been planted, so maybe | shall be selling these instead of feasting on them. Naturally the rest of the household are not aware of these plans! With Sharon forced to be off work as a hairdresser, the one beneficiary has been Jakey dog. He has been walked miles more than usual, but can't understand why nobody else is about, especially his fortnightly walk at West Acre with his buddy Baxter. | am pleased to report that on Easter Saturday, April 11” the first of the house martins returned. Last year it was April 14". Luckily we had anticipated this event and had flooded Eastgate Lane, outside the front gate. There are no nest repairs as yet but at least a drink was easily available and with several cold days since, a good sleep in their old nests was exactly what was required. Just one little problem has arrived here -the presence in the garden of a pair of house sparrows, which we have not seen for several years. These are early nesters and often build their straw nests in unoccupied house martins’nests. Never mind, only one pair is hardly a problem. With time to reflect, | notice other birds in the garden and can report on an abundance of blackbirds, pigeons, finches of all sorts, a smattering of dunnocks, great tits, blue tits and even a pair of partridges. The latter might nest here if only Jake the terrier can be persuaded to stop chasing them. Well, that’s all for this month. In May | shall be another year older, if not wiser. Keep self-isolating and imagine the party we shall all enjoy when this virus has eventually been defeated. Mike Chamberlain Village Link | 7 A Fourville Quiz Can you remember the names of the shows? The decision, taken in consultation with Roger and Christine Coe who kindly host this event, will leave many loyal supporters disappointed but it is the responsible thing to do. Since the first event in 2011, the tractor road run and country fair has been a major contributor to the fund raising efforts of ‘friends’ who are trying to maintain and preserve the fabric of the church. Over the years, somewhere in the region of 325 tractor journeys around our local lanes have taken place and last year saw a record 45 tractors take part. The generous sponsorships donated by the drivers have contributed greatly to any financial success of the day. Akey feature of the country fair has always been the stall holders, displaying their talents and expertise in a wide range of hobbies, crafts, conservation, charitable and entrepreneurial skills. More than 50 such have taken part at various times since 2011 and, bearing in mind the difficulties now being faced by so many small businesses, another cancellation in their programme will be a blow. The vintage tractor road run and country fair has always taken place on Father's Day. For many of our supporters, the event has provided an opportunity to come together as a family to enjoy a day out and indeed, one of the great successes of the event has been its bringing together of our communities in family groups. The present pandemic now forces many families to physically stay away from each other on important occasions like Father's Day which, despite modern digital communications, means it will be less of a special day. With grateful thanks to all who have supported this event over the years, we hope we can meet again next year. Peter Coe Thank You Thank you so much to The Post Office Stores who have delivered our food when our son was ill and could not shop for us, The Grimston Surgery for our medicine delivered to our door ,and of course the Postmen for our letters which keeps us in touch with the outside world. Faith « Hope « Love For those who are ill Merciful God, we entrust to your tender care those who are ill or in pain, knowing that whenever danger threatens your everlasting arms are there to hold them safe. Comfort and heal them, restore them to health and strength through Jesus Christ our Lord. For those isolated God of compassion, be close to those who are ill, afraid or in isolation. In their loneliness, be their consolation; in their anxiety, be their hope; in their darkness, be their light; through him who suffered alone on the cross, but now reigns with you in glory, Jesus Christ our Lord. Caring for others Lord Jesus Christ, you taught us to love our neighbour, and to care for those in need as if we were caring for you. In this time of anxiety, give us strength to comfort the fearful, to tend the sick, and to assure the isolated of our love, and your love, for your name's sake. For key workers For all whose day starts with anxiety, as they leave the security of home worrying about facing the risk of infection. Loving God, be close, keep them safe in their daily tasks. May they know our love and appreciation of the vital work they do — caring for those who are sick — emptying our bins — stocking our supermarket shelves and many other vital jobs to keep our world turning. For NHS and care workers We pray for doctors, nurses and carers as they work to bring healing. We give mighty thanks for them. Lord be with them in their fight on the front line off this war against a virus we cannot see. The invisible killer in our midst. We thank them for their dedication, commitment, bravery but most of all for their love. For the gentle care they give to every patient. Be with them in desperate times, keep them strong yet loving and when their work is done be with them in their weariness and in their tears. For our world God of love and hope, the world feels strange right now. Some are worried they might fall ill, others are anxious for their family and friends. We think of the scientists working to discover medicines to help those who are ill and a vaccine which will protect us from this hidden enemy in our midst. Great Village Yard sale and Car Boot- this was due to be held on Sunday 26th April, we then moved it to Sunday 7th June. Unfortunately this is now POSTPONED until the Autumn when we will hopefully be able to hold it safely. Once we know a bit more and have a new date | will let everyone know so that hopefully we can make it a big success. Anyone who had already booked a stall and is unable to make the new date once it is announced will be offered a refund. In the meantime if you are using lockdown as a chance to have a clear out why not sign up to the yard sale once the new date is announced?? MeadowFest 2020 - Unfortunately with everything being so uncertain as to when things will be allowed to get back to ‘normal’ we have no choice but to CANCEL MeadowFest 2020. We are hoping to hold a Family Festive Fair towards the end of the year so keep an eye out for updates as we organise dates etc. Hopefully if restrictions are lifted before the end of summer term we may be able to squeeze in a car boot and a quiz night as obviously we have now had to cancel 2 of our biggest fundraisers which the school relies on. Holly Meadows PTA hopes our staff, families who attend the school and everyone in our lovely villages stay safe and well and we look forward to seeing you all soon. Village Link | 15 Message from Norfolk Constabulary - Neighbourhood Team The Constabulary is continuing to work with those people who breach the rules by way of engaging and explaining, we will use tickets or report to court anyone who continuously break rules after being warned. It is pleasing to say, for the majority, this approach is working. During this time the Constabulary is continuing to deliver day to day policing and officers are still responding to calls as they come in. We are still encouraging everyone to use the same methods of contacting us, 999 for an emergency i.e. a crime in progress, 101 or via our website contact us to report a crime that has happened. Officers are practising social distancing at all police premises but sometimes due to the nature of our work we will have to work close to together, for example, arresting a violent offender. During this period of time, we are concerned that Domestic Violence could increase and we would like to reassure people that we are still here and will help, so please if you are aware of anyone who is living in fear of domestic violence get in touch with us. We would also like to remind people that although we are spending most of our time at home please don't stop carrying out the #9pm. Routine as these simple steps in the routine: close windows and lock doors will help prevent you from becoming a victim of crime. The differences reflect the way in which our communities change and evolve with time. Looking at photographs of one hundred years ago we can recognise buildings and streets. Although some buildings have gone — St Luke’s Chapel, the station, some of the long rows of labourers’ cottages — most of the road layout remains the same. We have lost many services - one hundred years ago there were numerous pubs, a court house, police station, several grocers and butchers, the station and three schools but we are fortunate to retain a school, a bus route, pubs and an excellent village shop. In 1914 there were many more young people in the village; over 60% of the population was of working age, and there were more children whereas unlike today, older people were a rarity. Of these many workers almost none would have left the village to work. The village was dependent upon agriculture and for most work meant farming: a very large majority of the men who went to fight in the Great War were agricultural labourers. For many people living in Grimston one hundred years ago meant a hard life of grinding poverty trying to make agricultural wages stretch to necessities and often running up too much debt with the prospect of a stay in the Union Workhouse a constant threat. Trade Unions were beginning but we don't know if there were any in our village or if they were in any way able to influence lives or help people in troub le. Pensions for working men had just come into being but there were no social service to pro vide support in difficult times, people relied upon the goodness of their family, friends and neighbours to help them through. And just as now there was St Botolph's to which those with faith could turn. It is impossible to imagine the road layout of our village one thousand years ago. Rev Goodall (the church historian) tells us that the village church was probably in the same position as our present church with the village around it. Although no buildings survive from one thousand years ago we know that our village was large and important. At the time of Domesday, in 1086, Grimston was amongst the top 20% of settlements in the whole country. It was larger than Fakenham and Swaffham and five times the size of Lynn . A bustling and populous place of one hundred and fifty households , (presumably the number of souls in a “household” was very variable) Grimston had grown in size and prosperity alongside the pottery industry which flourished here until the late fifteenth century. The population would have been even younger than in 1914 18 | Village Link as life expectancy at that time was around thirty and medieval writers considered fifty to be very elderly. Child mortality was extremely high, common estimates are that 30% of children died before eleven. Everyone had to work and they worked in the village - on their land, on their Lord’s land or in the potteries. Despite the Black Death, in which the archaeologist Carenza Lewis suggests that Norfolk may have lost as much as 65% of its population , and economic decline, Grimston retained guilds, built a new and glorious church and enjoyed an annual fair when Henry Ill granted a charter for an annual St Botolph's Day Fair. The church was at the very centre of their lives and continued to be so for hundreds of years. In times of trouble medieval people may have sought material support from friends and family but spiritual comfort and hope they found in their church. Our village has survived and flourished for over a thousand years as has our church. St Botolph’s may now be closed but it will of course re-open hopefully in time for thanksgiving and rejoicing on St Botolph's Day, June 17" Keep safe Councillor Report All Borough Council meetings remain suspended, however, work to organise remote meetings is on going. Cars are regularly seen parking in front of the barriers blocking Roydon Common’s west car park. The barriers are there because car journeys are NOT to be taken to go a place of exercise or to go to local beauty spots, field, beaches and so on during the lockdown. The Council is currently unable to service dog bins and asks dog walkers to “lease take your dog poo home and put it in the black bin.” I have received several complaints about excessively smoky bonfires in our villages. Please consider your neighbours, avoid bonfires (even at night), keep noise down and kindly look out for each other. This is Timeless.... ‘And people stayed at home And read books And listened ‘And they rested And did exercises ‘And made art and played And learned new ways of being ‘And stopped and listened More deeply Someone meditated, someone prayed Someone met their shadow ‘And people began to think differently ‘And people healed. ‘And in the absence of people who Lived in ignorant ways Dangerous, meaningless and heartless, The earth also began to heal ‘And when the danger ended and People found themselves They grieved for the dead ‘And made new choices ‘And dreamed of new visions ‘And created new ways of living ‘And completely healed the earth Just as they were healed. The coronavirus lockdown, now extended, is causing difficulty for everyone by disrupting normal activities. It is even worse for those over 70 and those with underlying medical issues who are not supposed to leave home for any reason and who now need help, something they often feel uncomfortable, even guilty, about asking for. To the great credit of everyone involved, there is much evidence in our villages that family, neighbours and friends are rallying round to provide help and support to those in most need. Our local shops are going out of their way to help and supermarkets have increased deliveries way beyond the norm. Care is shining out in our communities. However, there may be occasions when things don’t work out. If this happens, extra help is at hand. A band of some 20 local volunteers is now active in providing help to those in our four villages who are over 70 years of age or those under 70 with underlying health problems who are isolated at home. We will help with doing any shopping for food and other supplies, collecting prescriptions, posting letters and parcels and so on. No job is too small or too large. If you can click but not collect they will do that for you. If being in isolation is causing anxiety, fear or a sense of loneliness then we can offer a friendly phone call, either as a one off or as a regular event. If you need help for anything, don’t hesitate to call one of the numbers below between 9.00am and 1.00pm any day including weekends to speak to one of your friendly village co-ordinators who will then organise these services for you. We are above all social beings. Lock down has driven us into an unnatural place of solitude. We are experiencing a test for which we were not prepared. We suddenly feel like hermits or monks who for pursuit of God choose to deny themselves the blessing of relatives and neighbours. There have always been pandemics, as the poem from the Spanish flu of 1919 reminds us. Then there was government lock down, but thousands died. They always raise questions, many without easy answers. For one, why do viruses exist at all? You need an electron microscope to see one. But they punch way above their weight, and overnight humble a nation, cripple the economy, rob households of income, and devastate health. We have only to go into the garden, if we are fortunate to have one, and see an invasion of various weeds, to realise there is a flaw even in the best kept lawn. But we thought God created a good world with “All things bright and beautiful.” Before we give way to being disgruntled with God, we should take a look at ourselves. For the root of this coronavirus was the result of a piece of human folly. For years warnings of the dangers from Asian “wet markets” selling a mixture of wild and domestic animals of an outbreak of zoonotic diseases have not been heeded. Even when Dr Li Wen Liang warned of a new virus in Wu Han, the authorities decided to ignore his words. Why do we embrace such folly? Lock Down has not only plunged us into solitude, especially if we live alone, but fear and insecurity. Stripped of so much that helped to cover over our insecurity and mask our mortality, we look for a source of peace and serenity. The invitation to write came on Easter Monday. The previous day a “Happy Easter’greeting with a bunch of lovely garden flowers and some delicious Easter eggs was left at our front door by a kind neighbour. Memories of childhood days when often Easter eggs rattled with some goodies inside came. But of course that missed the point that the egg should remain empty to remind us that the tomb where Jesus was buried was discovered to be empty by the women who went to anoint his body. What a wonderful truth to help us for these “strange days” For the flaw in creation and the folly of humanity were both defeated by the one who invited us to “come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and | will give you rest”. And for the many who live alone, Peter, who panicked when challenged about his association with Jesus the Nazerene, told his anxious friends, “ast all your care on him for he cares for you.” John Wallis Village Link | 31 Pet minding service fe Robert Fox Renovation ‘or dogs & small pets.
