3.2. POWER
Sleep Mode 2 mA
3.3. MECHANICAL
3.4. GPS
The device uses a 50 channel GPS receiver with external antenna. GPS/SBAS engine (WAAS,
EGNOS, MSAS) with -162dBm sensitivity.
Extensive filtering is implemented inside the NX50 to detect possible invalid GPS data due to partial
loss of GPS signal or reflected GPS signals. The power to the GPS can be controlled when GPS is no
longer needed to save power consumption from the external power source. Mechanisms also exist to
detect removal or tampering with the external GPS antenna, in which case GPS tamper alarms can be
generated.
When the GPS has been switched off for longer than 2 hours, the GPS satellite position data must
be downloaded and refreshed again by the GPS device. Usually this is done when the GPS has

satellites in vision. With assisted GPS (A-GPS) the satellite position data is downloaded by
connecting to a server via GPRS. In this way, downloading can commence even when the GPS
has no view of the sky, only GSM-GPRS connectivity is required. This feature can be enabled or
disabled from the base station.
NOTE: If A-GPS is enabled, the centre point of the country where the device is used must be
setup; else no GPS lock will occur.
3.5. GSM
The GSM interface is a quad band modem (900/1800/850/1900MHz) which is SMS, GPRS (class 10)
and Edge capable, which is used as main wireless remote communication.
GSM jamming detection is part of the standard product. See paragraph 5.12.7 for the GSM jamming
alarm description. The GSM antenna is built into the device which simplifies the installation process.
2. Panic Input (only available on v54+) – This input can be connected to a normally closed, grounded
Panic Button.
3. Generic Input (only available on v54+) – This input can be used as a general status input.
The analogue input interfaces to a special multi-way switch for detecting “business” or “private” trip
selection.
The device has 1 pulsed input, which can be used for pulsed speed measurement. In order to use the
speed-pulse input, it must be calibrated according to the GPS prior to activation

2. Buzzer.
3. General Output (only available since v54+) – This output can be used as a general output.
3.10. LINBUS
This is a multi-purpose bus which can connect to various peripheral and diagnostic devices. At present
the G55, stealth guard and Driver Behaviour Interface (DBI) connects to this bus.
This input reads the driver identification tag (Dallas one wire interface).

4. INTERNAL COMPONENTS
4.1. ACCELEROMETER
An on-board 3 axis ±8g accelerometer which is used for various movement-detection functions:
1. Vehicle movement
3. Crash/severe crash
The data flash is used for all data storage. It stores settings, collected data and is also used during
over the air upgrading.
The real-time clock is used for time-keeping when the GPS is switched off. The internal time is
synchronized with GPS (GMT) when GPS lock is obtained. Whenever GPS time falls away, the real-
time clock keeps the device time updated.

5. FUNCTIONS
The data flash stores data which is preserved even when all power including the internal backup
battery is lost.
2. High sample rate data for crash downloads – 24 files of half hour data
The device can be installed in any orientation within the vehicle. Due to this requirement, the device
must be notified what the horizontal plane is. This occurs after installation where the vehicle must be
parked on a horizontal surface and the “Finalise Installation” control is pressed on the G55.
Once HPA has been done, Roll over and Box tamper can be detected.
Note: Crash and Severe crash detection features function independent of HPA or VPA and is available
“out of the box” (if enabled on the base).
When HPA is done, the device will learn where front, rear and left/right directions are. This will take
place during normal driving after the installation has been finalised. Only once HPA and VPA is done,
will it be possible to detect the harsh driving events (harsh brake, acceleration, cornering and bump).
Before VPA is done in the vehicle, only harsh brake alarms are possible which is, for the time being,
derived from the GPS speed.
The following very important steps are required for these functions to perform properly:
1. The device must be firmly fixed to a rigid body part of the vehicle. A body part
susceptible to vibration is NOT acceptable. Double sided tape or any type of putty or
wedging the device into some slot is NOT rigid enough mounting. The device must be
mounted in such a way that it does not move in any direction during the life-time of its
installation, in many times for years. If this requirement is not observed, all harsh driving,
box tamper/ roll over and crash/sever crash detection functions must be disabled and
cannot be used.

2. Once installation is done or when any maintenance is done which resulted in only the
slightest movement of the device, the “Finalise Installation” step must be done from the
G55 after the device has been fixed to the vehicle properly. The vehicle must be parked
horizontally, ignition switched off and no movement of the vehicle is allowed during the
HPA action (~30 seconds). Even climbing in/out of the vehicle or closing the door/bonnet
during this time must be avoided.
When a unit is removed from the vehicle, the “De-finalise Installation” command can be issued from the G55
to avoid harsh driving and box tamper/roll over events from being logged unnecessarily.
(2) Accelerometer detects movement for a few seconds (movement without ignition could trigger
unauthorized movement alarm if enabled- see alarms paragraph)
(2) Accelerometer movement absent for at least x minutes if the trip was started by movement
sensor only. (x is a setting from the base). If the trip was started by ignition input, the
removal of ignition for 10 seconds will end the trip.
(3) If accelerometer started trip, no speed Input (from GPS or Pulsed input, depending on
configuration).
When Tracking Mode is enabled, the unit will send tracking packets at the Normal Sample Rate
(configurable from the Base Station) when the vehicle trip is busy. When Tracking Mode is enabled
and the “Send Immediate First Movement” is ticked, the first logged position is sent immediately as a
“First Startup”.
The tracking mode positions can also be combined with alarms triggered from various conditions. See
paragraph 5.12 for all the status/alarm triggers.
A position sample can be triggered by one of the following conditions, which-ever occurs first:
1) An alarm or status
2) Distance travelled

5) When vehicle has departed after the stationary time for some distance
7) Business/Private switch
8) Trip summary
9) Health check
It is possible to set 4 authorized user numbers on the device. These 4 numbers can do the following
operations:
1. Remote Polling
This is done by sending a “p”, “P”, “t” or “T” command directly to the tracking device cell
number. The NX50 will respond with its latest position to the base station which will send a
text message to the user with the street names filled in.
2. Panic / Emergency
This is done by sending an “e”, “E” command directly to the tracking device cell number. The
NX50 will respond with a Panic alarm to the base station. The end result is the same as
using a panic button on the device. For this to work, Panic must be enabled as an alarm.
3. Watch mode
A user can send the watch message directly to the tracking device cell number. When the
vehicle starts moving, a text message is sent directly to the user number notifying it that the
vehicle has started moving. No message is sent to the base station. This is done by sending
a “w”, “W” command directly to the tracking device cell number.
A user can ask the device directly what its current position is and what GSM cell towers are
visible. The reply is sent directly from the device and therefore no street information is
possible in this message. The GSM cell tower id is also returned. This is done by sending a
“Gmp”, command directly to the tracking device cell number.

It is possible to identify the driver of the vehicle with this functionality. The Dallas iButton tag is
presented to a suitable reader which is connected to pins 4 and 11 of the main loom. The DBI can also
be used for driver id presentation (see paragraph 5.9)
With the help of the buzzer and starter cut-out, presenting of the driver identification button can be
enforced onto the driver when the trip is started.
When a driver tag is presented inside a trip (i.e. when a driver is changed inside a trip) the NX50 shall
force a virtual trip end to enable the backend to keep track of which driver drove which parts of the
trips.
The following settings are available to further customise the driver identification function:
1. Enable encrypted keys with vehicle categories to allow only keys with the correct internal
programming and force drivers with suitable qualification to drive a vehicle.
3. Control the valid time of the driver id key before and after the trip has started or ended.
When connecting the DigiCore supplied multi-way switch, the driver can select the type of trip which
he is about to make, either a business or private trip.
With this information, the backend can generate trip reports with the business/ private information filled
in which enables the owner to keep records of his/her trip types. This can be used typically for a tax
report.
Using the accelerometer, the device is capable of measuring various driver behaviour events which
can be used to evaluate the driver‟s driving-style. These events are harsh accelerate, harsh brake,
harsh corner and harsh bumps. The trigger thresholds of all these events are settable from the base
station. The mechanism of measuring G-forces and what it means in the context of the NX50 is further
explained in the document “DCT-TEC-106 Ctrack NX40 – Functional Overview – Driver Behaviour
Monitoring”.
Speed is also used as an input to the driver behaviour monitoring alIndicator (DBI).
To notify the driver visually and audibly of his/her drive style while driving, the Driver Behaviour
Indicator (DBI) mechanism is also part of the device. When a DBI device is connected onto the LIN

bus and there are incidents of over-speed, harsh brake, harsh acceleration or harsh corner, a series of
coloured LED‟s will light up in sequence. When the driver is again driving within the set limits, the
harsh driving LED‟s will be decremented. There is also a driver identification presentation point on top
of the DBI which can be used for normal driver id functions (see paragraph 5.7)
The DBI usage is further described in the document “DCT-MAN-187 – DBI User Manual”.
5.10. ODOMETER
The NX50 calculates vehicle odometer using the vehicle speed. Vehicle speed is determined from the
GPS speed. Odometer is then calculated on a per second basis from the previous 1 second speed,
i.e. when a vehicle travels at a speed of 120 km/h travels a distance of 33 meter / second. These
distances are accumulated into the vehicle odometer which is reported in various messages to the
base station.
When GPS signal is lost, the speed and odometer falls away and odometer calculation is then not
possible. The NX50 implements a crow fly correction scheme to adjust the odometer when the GPS
signal is restored.
In the case of the speed pulse input being connected and calibrated, the speed from this input will
always be used to determine distance travelled. Irrespective of GPS lock state. It follows then that the
crow fly mechanism will not be used in such instances.
1. Switching off the GPS off after a settable time has expired after a trip has ended.
2. Switching everything off after a settable time has expired after a trip has ended. In this mode
the device can be programmed to switch on periodically to check incoming messages.
Ignition on or any movement shall also switch the device on. As will the panic button (from
version 91.54).

Send immediate will cause events/statuses that get triggered to be sent to the base immediately. If it is
set as an alarm, send immediate is implied since alarms are always sent immediately.
5.12.1. Panic
When the Panic input is activated and the Panic status is enabled, a panic alarm is sent to the base
station. The Panic input also wakes the unit if it is in low power mode. A panic alarm will be logged
and sent if the unit is woken with the Panic switch.
The device internal battery is continuously monitored to check whether it drops to a level which is
too low for proper device operation. This will only happen when the external power source is
disconnected because this battery is continuously charged when external power is above the
specified level.
If the “Internal Battery Low” status is enabled it will be set and sent to the base station when the
unit‟s internal battery is below 3.6V for more than 5 minutes and is cleared when the internal
battery voltage rises above 3.7V.
When enabled, this status is generated when the external power (vehicle battery) is removed and
cleared when the power is again restored.

When the vehicle is standing still, (no speed detected) and the unit is tilted, it sends a Box Tamper
message to the Report Base.
The areas are separated into 3 areas, Custom (200 polygon points), Border Guard (200 polygon
points) and Tollgates (200 points). The Custom areas can be defined by a user either from the
base station or online-web. At this stage the Border Guard and Tollgate areas are shipped with SA
borders and Tollgates. These areas can be changed from an FTP server download. For Border-
guard and custom areas, the area alarm is generated. For toll-gate detection, a special message is
generated (if enabled) showing the toll-gate id and direction of travel through the toll gate. A back-
end report can then be drawn to indicate which toll gates were passed during a certain time.
Border Guard can be disabled independently of other area alarms by leaving the “Border Guard”
status box unticked on the base. If the “Area Violation” box is unticked however, the Border Guard
functionality will also be switched off.
This alarms shows that the vehicle is moving without ignition switched on and therefore detects a
possible vehicle towing or flatbed removal. The ignition input must be connected and working for
this alarm to be valid.
NOTE: When the unit is installed without an Ignition input, the “Unauthorised Movement”
alarm must be disabled from the Base Station. When the “Disable Movement Sensor Trip
Start” box is ticked, the unauthorised movement alarm will not trigger even if the vehicle is
moved with the ignition being switched off.
The device has special software inside the GSM device to detect possible GSM jamming and try to
report the status. It is not always possible to report jamming, especially if the jamming signal is too
strong. The Jamming algorithm has the following states:
COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL
Revision: 04 01 November 2011 Page 21 of 48
© DigiCore Technology (Pty) Ltd
An alarm will be triggered when a jamming state from medium to jammed is detected. This alarm
status will be cleared when the jamming status returns to below medium. When gsm jamming is
detected, stealth guard activated. The GSM jamming alarm is dependent on the level of the
jamming signal and therefore it cannot always be guaranteed that this alarm can be sent.
When this alarm is activated, it will trigger when the LIN bus communication between the
TM
StealthGuard and the NX50 is broken. This will trigger a “Box Tamper” to the reporting Base
Station when the alarm is enabled.
When enabled, the unit will send a Harsh Acceleration status when the predefined harsh
acceleration limit value has been exceeded. The alarm is only generated after HPA and VPA is
completed. The limit is adjustable from the base station.
When enabled, the unit will send a Harsh Brake alarm when the predefined harsh brake limit value
has been exceeded. The GPS will be used to trigger the event when the harsh events algorithm is
still busy with HPA and VPA. The limit is adjustable from the base station.
When enabled, the unit will send a Harsh Corner alarm when the predefined harsh corner limit
value has been exceeded (one threshold for both right and left turns). The alarm is only generated
after HPA and VPA is completed. The limit is adjustable from the base station.
When enabled, the unit will send a Harsh Bump alarm when the predefined harsh bump limit value
has been exceeded. The alarm is only generated after HPA and VPA is completed. The limit is
adjustable from the base station.
GPS tamper status is detected when the external GPS antenna is removed, cut or short circuited. If
enabled as alarm, the unit will send a GPS tamper alarm to the base station. The status is cleared
when the unit detects an external antenna is operational again or the status is disabled.

5.12.15. Roll-Over
When the vehicle is moving and the box is tilted, a roll-over status is triggered and if enabled as
alarm, a roll-over alarm will be sent to the base station.
When the vehicle exceeds the speed threshold, an over-speed status is triggered and if enabled as
alarm, an over-speed alarm will be sent to the base station.
When the vehicle has been stationary with the engine on (idling), the excessive idling status is
triggered and if enabled as alarm, the excess idle alarm will be sent to the base station. The time
that the vehicle is allowed to idle before this event is set is adjustable from the base station.
This alarm indicates when a certain amount of SMS have been send. This is an indication that
GPRS is not working, or the unit doesn‟t have any GPRS settings. To disable this alarm, set the
”Max Daily SMS” to 0 from the Base Station. This “Max Daily SMS” count will be cleared for each
day.
The internal accelerometer is used to detect if a severe crash occurred. An alarm is triggered when
the g-force detected in any axis exceeds the severe crash threshold and is sent to the Base Station
if enabled. This alarm will be cleared by the longer lasting of 10 seconds since the event was
triggered, or when the severe crash pulse is absent. The trigger threshold of the alarm can be
changed from the Base Station.
This input can be used as a general status input. It can be set active high or active low from the
base station. The alarm level/severity can also be set to low, medium, high or very high, and the
input name can be customised. Events will not be logged faster than 10 seconds apart and the
status will be cleared once the input returns to its non-active level. If enabled as alarm, an alarm wil
be sent to the base station.

external power is removed, for complete StealthGuard functional specification; see DCT-SPC-312.
For G55 User Guide, refer to DCT-MAN-097, section 6.2 has more information regarding the
TM
StealthGuard .
5.13.2. Testing
TM
The StealthGuard can be tested by connecting a G55 to the Lin Bus. Go to the “Insure Tools”
TM
menu and select “Test StealthGuard”. The StealthGuard will then transmit a message for about 5
– 10 seconds. A 2 Way radio can be used to verify this.
The NX50 can be upgraded over the air via FTP. When the unit receives the upgrade message from
the Base Station, it will connect to the specified FTP server and download the configuration file
specified. The configuration file provides detail on the upgrade file. DigiCore provides tools for
automating the upgrade process because detailed knowledge of the database structure and message
format is required.
The communication defaults will provide enough information to the NX50 to start communicating to a
master base station. It will detect from the SIM IMSI number which master-base number to use once it
starts up.
The list is controlled by DigiCore and should a distributor require any additional master-base numbers
or networks a request must be sent to DigiCore Product Support (DPS).
The list is loaded at production and can also be uploaded with the installation tools (G55 or CTech
Terminal).
For logistics and production purposes, the software on the device is as far as possible standard and
the same for all installations. The functionality on the device is controlled by an extensive layer of
settings. With these settings areas like the reporting profile, tracking mode, enabling and disabling of
alarms, watch mode, geo-zones and authorised external numbers can be controlled.

This mechanism is highly customisable and needs technical expertise from DCT. DCT has
implemented 3 product codes on the NX50.40 to date.
The unit is able to receive Data Calls. When a Data Call is received, a Data Call connection at 9600
baud will be established. After the connection is made, the unit will print all debug prints via the Data
Call.
NOTE: This feature requires that “data calls” are supported by the SIM card in the unit.

6. DATA COMMUNICATIONS
Various data security measures are built in the communications model to ensure the user data is
protected.
A proprietary binary protocol is used to exchange data between the base station and the device. Detail
knowledge of the device, base station and protocol is required to de-cipher the message format.
The device will only respond and send SMS to its Master-base number, Reporting number and the 4
user settable authorized numbers.
GPRS connection is done only to one TCP/IP server on a one to one basis. Due to the proprietary
nature of the message structure, it is not possible to sabotage the device with known internet spam
methods.
The device can be setup to communicate via GPRS only or GPRS with SMS fallback if GPRS fails.
Tracking data is stored into the flash device to ensure data is not lost when communication is not
possible.
Trip summary is sent at the end of a trip and contains summary data of the previous trip. Trip summary
data is used by the base station to generate efficient trip reports without causing too high loading on
the database.

This data is sent once a day at the time set from the base station. This data is the minimum set of data
which needs to be sent when a dormant system is required and contains:
This data notifies the base station of the toll gate area through which the vehicle has driven, the
direction in which has travelled and the time of the occurrence. With this data, the base station is able
to compile a report of the toll gate charges of the vehicle.
The device must have the toll gate areas loaded and toll gate reporting must be enabled for this
function to work.
The daily histogram data is sent once per day when the periodic health check message is sent. The
histogram data provides a distribution of the speed travelled during the day as well as die X+, X- and Y
g-forces experienced through the day.
In the speed accumulation case, the speed is checked each second and one of 8 counters
incremented depending on speed band in which the vehicle is travelling at that second. The 8 speed
bands are:

The purpose of this data type is to be able to re-construct at a very high detail level data which led up
to a specific event (e.g. when an accident occurred). The device stores speed, position and g-force at
the highest rate possible into the available
memory. Position is stored at 10 second interval,
speed at 1 second interval and g-force (XYZ-
directions) is stored at 200 millisecond interval.
The data is only stored when the vehicle is moving and is stored in 24 files of 30 minutes each. These
files are overwritten in a circular pattern (oldest gets overwritten) and it is therefore important to
download the data as soon as possible after an event occurred.
The device and base station has a complete set of messages and protocols to properly register and
setup all the settings.

satellites in view (e.g. inside a parking basement), the GPS will be
switched off immediately ignoring the GPS switch off time setting
GPS Unlock Odo Correction Odo Correction Factor- The correction factor used to adjust the
Factor odometer when GPS signal loss was experienced or the system
detects there was a unit reset inside a trip.
Assisted GPS To enable or disable the Assisted GPS function (paragraph 3.4.1).
The latitude/longitude must be filled in which roughly specifies the
centre point of the country when the device is going to be used. The
optional server details is only required if DigiCore hosts another
server with the A-GPS services. This is not utilized at this stage and
notifications will be sent to all distributors when such a server exists.
Immobilise The speed below which the immobiliser is allowed to activated is set
here. Setting it to 255 will result in immediate immobilisation when an
immobilisation event is triggered (e.g. immobilise on area alarm is
set) or the immobilise command is sent to the mobile from the base.

The speed pulse functionality can be enabled here. If the speed pulse factor is known for the
vehicle (the same type of vehicle has been calibrated using the G55) then this factor can be
assigned to the vehicle without calibration required. See Section 8.4.1.7 for more.

The Alarm Mode and Normal Mode report settings controls how the device reports (sample rate and
positions per packet) when an alarm is triggered and how it logs positions and reports in normal mode.
It also enables the toll gate reporting and daily histogram. See paragraph 5.9.
The power save section enables and disables the power save, the time which must elapses before
power save is entered and the periodic wake-up time. See paragraph 5.11.

If the “Disable Movement Sensor Trip Start” box is ticked, a trip start will not be triggered based on
vehicle movement. Instead, the ignition must be wired for this purpose. Do not tick this box in cases
where the ignition input is not connected.

8. INSTALLATION
1. It is of the utmost importance that the device is permanently and rigidly fixed on the vehicle
against a solid body part. Due to temperature constraints, mounting the device inside the
engine compartment where the environment is very hot, oily and dusty is not advised. The device
is not waterproof and therefore care must be taken to choose a spot on the vehicle where there is
no possibility of water damage.
3. There is a G55 and PC application which can be used by the installation technician to verify
operation and do various maintenance tasks.
4. A few G55 screen shots are shown in the next paragraphs to provide the reader with some idea
of its operation.
6. For completeness of installation and testing, GSM signal coverage is required. The installer and
call centre agent can then verify all communication and operational aspects of the installation
before releasing the vehicle.

This operation switches the device‟s internal battery off to conserve power while the device is in
transit or storage. This action can only be performed while external power is present on the unit.
After successful completion, the NX40 device will wait for up to 60 seconds for external power to
be removed, before it will switch off the internal battery.
This will force the device to reset all its settings and report back to its predefined Master base
as a newly installed unit.

This will clear the horizontal plane alignment of the device and prevent the transmission of
unnecessary alarms due to movement after de-installation.
This starts the Speed calibration, which is an automatic process whereby the Pulse input is
calibrated with the GPS, to measure speed.
Before starting the speed pulse calibration, make sure that the device has 3D GPS lock (see
section 8.3.3 - GPS Monitor Screen).
The process must be completed within 3 minutes after starting; otherwise it will time out and
need to be restarted.

This starts the Horizontal Plane Alignment, or the “Finalization”, of the device. During the
Finalization, the NX40 device calculates its own orientation of installation, with respect to the
horizontal surface of the earth. The accuracy of this calculation determines the validity of the
Driver Behaviour Alarms (section 5.9) that are generated and reported.
Once the operation has been completed, a message will be displayed informing the user
whether it was successful or not, e.g.:
