Chapter 1: Migrating to ANSYS Fluent 16.2
The purpose of the ANSYS Fluent Migration Manual is to help you transition from ANSYS Fluent 16.1
to ANSYS Fluent 16.2. Read through the entire document to understand the changes that have taken
place. The information is enclosed in the following chapters:

• New Features in ANSYS Fluent 16.2 (p. 3)

• Updates Affecting Code Behavior in ANSYS Fluent (p. 5)

• Text Command List and Settings Changes (p. 7)

To access documentation files on the ANSYS Customer Portal, go to http://support.ansys.com/document-

ation. Here you can also find Release Notes and a list of Known Issues and Limitations. Expand the
General category to access these documents

If you are upgrading across several releases, you may find it helpful to consult the Migration Manuals
for the intervening releases as well. You can find these by searching the Online Documentation on the
Customer Portal for Fluent Migration Manual.

Information about past, present, and future operating system and platform support is viewable via the
ANSYS website.

Please note that beta features have not been fully tested and validated. ANSYS, Inc. makes no commit-
ment to resolve defects reported against these prototype features. Changes in the solution behavior
are sometimes expected and are not captured in this document. However, if there are solution differences
between the Release 16.1 beta features and the Release 16.2 standard Fluent features that concern you,
contact technical support for assistance. Your feedback is appreciated and will help us improve the
overall quality of the product.

Chapter 2: New Features in ANSYS Fluent 16.2
New features available in ANSYS Fluent 16.2 are listed below. Where appropriate, references to the rel-
evant section in the User's Guide are provided.

Solver-Meshing

• The interpolation method for sliding boundaries has been improved for increased accuracy.

• The sliding mesh implementation has been optimized and performs better in parallel.

Models

• Heat Transfer and Radiation

– The Mapped option for modeling coupled walls no longer requires that one of the interfaces be
adjacent to a fluid zone, which means that you can model heat transfer at solid-solid mapped in-
terfaces. For information about this option, see The Mapped Option in the Fluent User's Guide.

• Acoustics

– The ability to process acoustic sources using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) for band analysis and
export (which was previously only available as a beta feature) has been enhanced, and is now fully
supported. This feature allows you to: read pressure signals from acoustic source data (ASD) files;
compute Fourier spectra of these signals at selected point probes and over the entire source zones;
create surface variables for visualizing the spectral properties of the flow pressure signals; and write
CGNS files of the spectrum data (which can be used for one-way coupling with ANSYS Mechanical
in the frequency domain). (FFT of Acoustic Sources: Band Analysis and Export of Surface Pressure
Spectra)

Parallel Processing

• Improvements have been made to reduce the time needed for reading and (especially) writing case
and data files in parallel, when the HDF I/O NODE0 mode is used. This improvement is more significant
(up to 30 times faster) when the number of cores being used is high. (Reading and Writing Files Using
Hierarchical Data Format (HDF))

Graphics, Postprocessing, and Reporting

• The performance of Fluent has been improved for cases in which the same field quantity is being monitored
in multiple monitors. The actual improvement will depend on the number of such monitors and the frequency
of the monitoring. Monitors sharing the same field quantity should be sequential in the monitor list for this
improvement to be effective.

General

• When running in batch mode through the command prompt with Exit On Error enabled in the Batch Options
dialog box or in the text user interface (file/set-batch-options), Fluent will now exit with a nonzero

value if the run was unsuccessful. The two types of errors that would cause a nonzero exit are if Fluent was
unable to check out a license or if there was an error during the execution of a command.

Note that in Windows you must start Fluent with the -wait command line option.

Beta Features

• There are also some exciting new enhancements available as beta features that you may be interested in
trying out. Detailed documentation is in the Fluent 16.2 Beta Features Manual which is available on the ANSYS
Customer Portal.

Chapter 3: Updates Affecting Code Behavior in ANSYS Fluent
This section contains a comprehensive list of the code changes implemented in ANSYS Fluent 16.2 that
may affect the output generated by the previous release.

Note that text that is in bold font represents key words that may facilitate your search for the changes
in code behavior.

Solver-Meshing

• The interpolation method for sliding boundaries has been improved for increased accuracy. These improve-
ments may lead to differences in results from prior releases.

• Improvements have been made in the algorithm that creates the mapping intersection for mapped interfaces,
in particular for cases with a partially overlapping mesh interface intersection (which requires the creation
of additional walls where the interface zones do not overlap). This may cause small differences in the solution
for newly set-up cases when compared to prior releases. If you have mapped mesh interfaces created in
Fluent 16.0 or 16.1, it is recommended that you recreate the interfaces, and then save and restart from a
new case file, in order to benefit from these improvements.

Turbulence

• For turbulent, wall-bounded flows, a correction has been made in the calculation of the viscous
heating contribution in the y+-insensitive temperature wall function. The accuracy of this contribution
will show a significant improvement compared to prior releases for cases in which all of the following
conditions are met: the fluid velocity is high in the near-wall control volume; the fluid has a molecular
Prandtl number that differs significantly from the turbulent Prandtl number; and the near-wall mesh
resolution is not very fine.

Heat Transfer

• The conservation of local heat flow rate has been improved for mapped interfaces, which may result in a
difference in the heat flow rate and temperature for mapped interface walls compared to prior releases.

Heat Exchangers

• A correction has been made for the dual cell heat exchanger model when run in parallel with the Fixed
Heat Rejection option enabled. This correction will result in solution changes compared to prior releases.

Discrete Phase Model

• For the Lagrangian wall film and multicomponent particles, the boiling rate is now computed as a function
of the mass-averaged latent heat. In addition, a correction has been made that affects the switching to the
boiling rate equation. These changes may cause differences in the Lagrangian wall film mass and composition
compared to prior releases.

• Improvements have been made with regard to the exchange of wall-film-related heat transfer across partition
boundaries that are aligned with walls where the Lagrangian wall film is enabled. This improvement may
cause differences in the results for parallel simulations compared to prior releases.

Release 16.2 - © SAS IP, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 5
Updates Affecting Code Behavior in ANSYS Fluent

• For the Lagrangian wall film model, corrections have been made for the treatment of wall film particles,
which have been reflected in some situations at partition boundaries. This improvement may cause differences
in the results of Lagrangian wall film simulations compared to prior releases.

Parallel Processing

• The parallel version of Fluent now uses an enhanced algorithm for intersecting sliding boundaries
for cases that involve polyhedral meshes and/or interfaces where there is a large difference in the
mesh resolution on either side. This algorithm will produce better intersections, and the solution
results are expected to improve.

• The zone IDs may change compared to prior releases for sliding mesh cases that are solved in parallel.

Chapter 4: Text Command List and Settings Changes
Changes to the text command settings are listed in the tables in Modified Text Command Settings (p. 7)
and New Text Command Settings (p. 7). Each table will list the changes to each of the text command
menus. Note that the modified setting can either be a changed setting or a deleted setting, while a
new setting is one that did not exist in previous versions of Fluent.
