Rationale for the OUMH 2203 is a university compulsory course for learners in a majority of OUM

Course The objectives of the course are to:
Objectives
1. Introduce learners to the professional use of English in workplace communication
2. Expose learners to the various types of communication that take place in the workplace
as well as to the typical range of business-related writing
3. Guide learners in lifting their four essential English language skills (listening, speaking,
reading, and writing) in the workplace context to at least the intermediate level.
Learning By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

1. Demonstrate basic language-based skills in interpersonal communication, business
etiquette and relationship-building in workplace contexts (PLO5, A2)
2. Employ the appropriate types of oral and written communication modes geared to a
range of business audiences (PLO1, C3)
3. Apply reading and writing skills to decipher a range of business documents and produce
effective business writing (PLO1, C3)
4. Use the appropriate vocabulary items and grammar in professional communication
(PLO4, A5)
Transferable English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in the workplace context
Skills: that are emphasised in this course are transferrable across all domains of life; in other words,
Skills and how these skills, once acquired within the course, may be applied, for instance, in real-life work
they are context (bearing in mind that an overwhelming majority of OUM learners are working adults),
developed and as well as in their present pursuit of higher education. In the latter context, the transferrable
assessed, Project skills will be useful in helping learners to engage with learning materials, communicate with
and practical lecturers and peers, produce effective written assignments, and so on. The aforementioned
experience and transferable skills are developed by learners via their engagement with the course module,

Synopsis The objective of this course is to introduce students to the necessary English language skills
for the working environment. It encompasses the skills that will enable the students to
communicate effectively when entering the office environment. Without these skills and the
knowledge accompanying them the student may find it hard to communicate effective when
they enter the profession they have chosen, particularly when it involves working in the office
environment.
