4 | WI80 Wind indicator

1 Introduction

General information
The WI80 Instrument presents you with relevant wind
information on a combined analog and digital display.
Adjustable backlight for night operation is provided
as well as adjustable intensity on the LED displays for
operation in sunshine.

Instrument layout
The WI80 display includes bargraph, dial with pointer
and LED display. Modes of operation and units for
measure are indicated by monitor diodes.

The instrument is
operated by 2 keys.
These are used to switch
between display modes,
to set parameter values
and to adjust background
illumination.

 The dial is divided into 360°. Hence, when the wind is

coming from port in true and relative modes, the image
of the starboard dial should apply.

2 Installation

Location of the unit

The WI80 should be mounted with special regard to the
unit’s environmental protection, temperature range and
cable length. Refer to the Specifications chapter.
Avoid mounting the unit where it is easily exposed to
sunlight, as this may unintendedly overheat the unit.

Panel mounting
The mounting surface must be flat and even to within
0.5 mm.

1 Drill 4 mounting holes and make a panel cut-out

according to the drilling template included in the
package
2 Use the supplied self tapping screws to secure the
unit to the panel
3 Apply the front corners

Do not over-tighten the screws!

Installation | 7
Cable connection and interface
Signal input, network and power supply are wired to the
enclosed terminal block that is to be plugged in on the
rear side.
The instrument is delivered with a 0.3 m SimNet cable
with a standard SimNet plug in both ends. One plug
1 must be cut off and the wires connected to terminals 3
through 6 according to the color codes shown below.

TERMINAL

8 RS485 GND No connection -
9 RS485 B NMEA0183 (Rx-) -

Any voltages other than those specified in the

product specification, page 29, may cause damage
to the instrument.

Data on the NMEA0183 port will be converted to SimNet/

 NMEA2000 format and distributed to other instruments
that are interconnected on the SimNet network.

8 | Installation
Securing the cables
Use the eclosed tie wrap to secure the cables to the
instrument.

Interconnecting instruments
Interconnect a series of instruments by using a SimNet
power cable with termination and T-joiners as illustrated
below.

compatible products, refer to the manual for those
products.

Use only 12V as SimNet supply!

Installation setup
SimNet, NMEA0183 and Demo mode are selectable
inputs on the WI80. After installation, the system must

Offset adjustment
Any residual error in the apparent wind angle can be
adjusted manually by entering an offset angle.
A positive value (no sign) indicates starboard offset
angle, while an offset angle to port is indicated with
negative value (negative sign).
The illustration below illustrates the required key presses
to offset the angle to 12.1°.

3 Operation

Turning the WI80 on

WI80 has no power key, and will be running as long as
power is connected.
When power is applied to the system the display will
indicate the active mode as shown in the table.

After approximately 3 seconds the instrument is

operative.
Default: Relative wind
Before the instruments is ready to operate the default
settings should be checked and changed if other values
are preferred. Refer to the Changing the default settings
chapter.

Using the keys

The instrument is operated by the 2 keys on the front.
They are used to switch between display modes, to set
values and to adjust the illumination as illustrated in the
table on the next page.
Key presses or key combinations not indicated in the
table have no effect.
Refer also to Operation flow chart.

Selecting active display mode

The WI80 can display relative, true and geographic wind
speed and direction.
The instrument will

scroll through these
REL
displays by pressing
GEO
the Mode/Setup
TRUE
key.
Active mode is indicated by a lit diode in the display.

 To calculate true wind, speed data input is required. To

calculate geographic wind, both speed and heading data
input is required. If these data are not available, no value
will be displayed in the LED when True or Geographic
wind is selected.

14 | Operation
Bargraph
The bargraph operates as a releative wind gust indicator.
The direction of the wind gust is displayed as shown in
the table below.

WIND DIRECTION BARGRAPH

1 lit diode per 1m/s increased wind

Operation | 15
Backlighting
The backlighting is adjusted by pressing the Light key
SELECT
when the instrument is in normal operation.
Current light setting will be indicated with the right LED
digit.
The light setting affects the diodes, the digital display
and the backlight as shown in the table:

LIGHT LEVEL DIODES AND DISPLAY BACKLIGHT

0 Low Off
1-7 Steps Steps
8 Medium Off
9 High Off

Level 8 and 9 are for bright daylight.

The instrument will return to normal operation 1 second

after the last key press.
Range: 0 - 9 Default value: 2

If several instruments are connected via SimNet,

the instruments can be grouped in different light
banks. Changing the backlight settings on one of the
instruments will affect all instruments in the group. Refer
to Light bank selection in Changing the default settings
chapter.

Error Alarm
In the event the error indicator is lit, the
instrument is not operable and service/repair is
required.

16 | Operation
Maintenance
The IS80 instruments are “repair by replacement” units,
and the operator is therefore required to perform only a
very limited amount of preventive maintenance.
If the unit requires any form of cleaning, use fresh
water and a mild soap solution (not a detergent). It
is important to avoid using chemical cleaners and
hydrocarbons such as diesel, petrol etc.
If a weather cover is available this should be put on
when the unit is not in use.Operation flow chart

The damping factor indicates how fast the display will
respond to changes in wind readings. The setting affects
both the LCD and the pointer.
The higher the damping factor the more stable display
reading on the instrument.

Wind speed alarm
The wind speed alarm setting defines the maximum wind
speed limit before an alarm is activated.
The alarm is acknowledged by a short press on one of
the keys.
The range is defined by the selected speed unit:

SPEED UNIT RANGE

m/s 000 - 031
kts 000 - 060
mph 000 - 069
km/h 000 - 111
BEAU 000 - 011

Default value: Maximum range for the selected speed

unit.
The illustration on next page shows how to use the keys
to change parameter values. It applies also for the wind
speed alarm adjust.

The alarm is turned off by setting the value to A000

20 | Changing the default settings

Wind shift alarm
Observe the dot after the “A”.

The wind shift alarm will monitor the wind angle. The
reference angle is set when the alarm is turned on,
and reset to present wind angle when an alarm is
acknowledged by a short press on one of the keys.
