Watercolor Bluebird

procreate practice kit

C OPYR I GH T 2 0 2 0 W OOLY PR ONTO

What’s included ?
To help you get the most out of
this exercise, I’ve included a
Procreate canvas with the
rough sketch and paper texture
included. You can follow along
using the techniques with the
sketch, or use your own!

The color palette is included

as well, and all brushes used
are included in the Wooly
Water Starter Pack.

Let’s get started !
1
In the canvas, begin
working with the sketch
layer at the bottom, on
a low opacity - around
20% should work.

Using the Rough

Brush with the paint
brush tool, begin to

2
lay down some dark
color on the wings,
the upper half of
the head, and along
the tail feathers.

3
Progressively build up
the colors, still using the
Rough Brush. I added
grey, then peach, then
orange/red, and then a
darker blue.

The Rough Brush has a blending

characteristic to it. Use this to your
advantage to begin mixing the
colors with each brush stroke!

4Now using the
Blotty Blender
with the Smudge
tool, begin to
blend the colors
together where
they meet.

Pull the pigment

downward to faintly
cover any areas that
weren’t filled in
before.

Use the smudge tool to push color away

from areas you want to highlight, into the
places you want to shade. The highlighted
areas here are the spaces I shaded.

5
Change to a new layer above the
previous one. Using the Scraggly
Watercolor with the Paint Brush Tool,
paint the beak, eye shape, and feet
with a black or dark grey color.

The brush is initially quite

light, so you may need to
lay multiple strokes to
get a deeper color.

6
Now move to another new layer,
above the previous ones. Using the
Damp Bleed brush with white, add in
some highlight to the eye, beak, and
feet.

STROKE DIRECTION

The damp brush is directional, meaning that

one side is flat and the opposite has the seep-
ing edge. So when applying highlight to the
outer eye, the brush stroke motion should be
clockwise in order to have the seeping edge
on the outside, and the flat edge on the inside.

7 Switching back to the bottom
painting layer, use the Damp Bleed
brush to add some dark “pooling”
areas along the edges.

Vary the pressure, size, and

opacity of the brush to get
some different effects, and
don’t be afraid to use the
smudge tool to blend, too!

8 Now go to a new layer at the top.
(You can also now hide your sketch
layer.) Using the Rough Brush, add in
some lighter, vibrant color.

Use these brush strokes to

help define the feathers
along the wings and tail!

Because this layer is

above the legs and eyes,
take care not to paint
over the eye. However,
you can use the oppor-
tunity to paint in some
feathers over the legs.

9
Still on this top layer
with the Rough
Brush, use a darker
color to shade in
around the eye.

10
Switching to the Watery
Bleed brush, use some
darker hues to add more
definition to the feathers
along the wings and tail.

11 Pinch all the
layers to
combine
them into
one merged
layer.

12
Then tap the
layer so the
side menu ap-
pears, and hit
“Select”

13
With the layer selected,
you can add a clean,
darker edge around the
entire painting, using the
Clean Edger with the
paint brush tool.

Use tonal colors that

correspond with the
colors along the edge
- just slightly darker.
This is to mimic the
way true watercolor
paint dries slightly
darker at the edges.
