Title:
Socket Set Screw Axial Holding Power

Author: Approved: Approved: Approved: Approved:

Gitas Jameikis Ralph Gabriel Jim Wasser Alan O’Brien Paul Matzen

Key Words: Socket Set Screw Grub Screw Holding Power

Originating Location: Morton Grove, IL

1.0 Purpose
This standard establishes axial holding force values for socket set screws used in mechanical seal assemblies.

2.0 Scope
Holding force test values for common socket set screw materials, sizes, recommended seating torques, & point
styles are covered in this standard.

3.0 Standard
Recommended seating torques and safe axial holding force values per screw for cup point socket head set
screws when equispaced around a drive collar.

Notes:
1. Based upon cup point set screws, test procedure per Global Technical Standard IS-171
2. Values valid for a minimum of 3 radially equispaced socket set screws. Values above include a 0.65
derating factor for opposed screws.
3. Screw threads were lubricated per IS-127. Non-lubricated threads result in significant reduction in values.
4. Values include a safety factor of N = 3.0 for m/c’s 0550 and 0236, N=1.8 for m/c 0649
5. Based upon 316 SS set screws with an average hardness of 190 Brinell.
6. Based upon hardened steel set screws with an average hardness of 45-53 Rc.
7. Valid for shafts with maximum shaft hardness of Rc = 32 (301 HB, 318 HV).
8. Test values 30% lower than tabulated values above for shaft hardness of Rc=39 (362 HB, 382 HV)
9. Testing with a hardness differential of Rc=30+ (286HB+, 302HV+) did not result in consistently higher
holding power values.
10. Use of knurled point set screws did not increase axial holding power test result over cup point set screws.
11. Valid for new socket set screws only, re-use of previously torqued set screws not recommended.
