Synopsis characterization of digital signals and systems. Probability theory,
random variables and random processes. Baseband digital transmission
and inter-symbol interference (ISI). Basic digital modulation schemes -
ASK; PSK; and FSK. Effect of noise and bandwidth limitation on the
performance of baseband and pass-band modulation and demodulation
schemes.
Course The objectives of this course are
Objectives 1. To introduce the elements of digital communication systems.
2. To introduce statistical analysis of random signals.
3. To understand digital modulation and demodulation techniques: ASK,
PSK and FSK.
4. To analyze sources of performance degradation in digital
communication systems
5. To understand and analyze the effect of noise and band-limited
transmission channels on the performance of digital modulation
schemes.

Learning Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Outcomes 1. Identify and explain the function of basic elements of digital
communication systems
2. Compute bandwidth requirements of digital transmission schemes
3. Analyze the performance of digital baseband and pass-band modulation
schemes in the presence of noise
4. Analyze ISI and methods to alleviate it
5. Design simple digital equalizers and modems (modulators and
demodulators)
