1.0 GENERAL
Preliminary Motor Starting Study (doc. # QGX/20/00/EL/TS/NA/003) highlighted the starting of
9.5MW Lean BOG Compressor Motor have been performed & issued by CTJV as a part of
preliminary engineering work to evaluate the performance of the electrical power generation and
distribution system including limitation of starting current of the BOG Compressor Motor.
Followings have been reported in the preliminary report;
1) In case of one train operation with two STG, voltage drop of 33kV system will exceed the
allowable limit for the BOG Compressor Motor starting. Hence it is recommended to use soft
starting method for this big compressor motor.
2) The direct on line starting of 3.2MW Cooling Water Pump Motor can be performed within
allowable limit of voltage drop criteria under one train operation with two STG.
After issuing the preliminary report, several design condition affect motor starting performance has
been modified (i.e. change existing QG-1 tie line connection to normal open condition etc.) based
on technical clarification between Company and CTJV. Also, one of important modification decided
is to introduce one new GTG to be normally in service to support power generation in plant
operation. The addition of this new GTG will provide significant improvement of the electrical
network stability and providing great help of large motor starting (e.g. eliminate additional soft
starting device for BOG Compressor Motor starting etc.).
Incorporating the modifications above, the Large Motor Starting Calculation has been performed by
MottMacDonald in UK (CTJV’s Study Consultant) by using latest data (including actual vendors’
data) as a part of detailed engineering work. The objectives of these final studies are to ensure the
electrical equipment designed by CTJV is suitable and satisfy project requirement.
These detailed study has been performed using computer software, ETAP PowerStation (Version
5.0.3), developed by Operation Technology Incorporated. 2 sheets of same software has been
provided to Company under this project. CTJV shall provide complete data-set (including model
data, equipment parameter data & library data) of ETAP software to Company for future use.

3.0 SYSTEM MODEL & STUDY CASES

Detailed description of study model and modeling methodology for the study has been described in
attached MottMacDonald Study Report. In order to create accurate model, important parameter of
individual equipment (i.e. Generator, Transformer, Motor, Cable, Bus-duct etc.) has been
incorporated actual manufacturer’s data and/or design.

Study cases and condition are also defined in the attached MottMacDonald Study Report. As per
the project requirement, starting of the largest motor at all switchboards has been performed.
In order to obtain accurate study result including actual generators’ reaction, all simulations are
performed with dynamic transient model in the ETAP program.
These study cases are considered and determined to obtain simulation result in various operating
condition and phase (e.g. Only Train-4 Operation, Train-4 & 5 Operation etc.).

Further to the above, based on the request made by Company during System Study Report
Presentation Meeting, following cases are additionally included in the final study cases;

<Additional Case-1>
1) Train-4 Operation : Normal Load Condition
2) Only 2STGs are in service
3) All VFDG are not in service
4) Simulate BOG Motor Start, and evaluate acceptable switchboard voltage drop by pre-
adjustment of OLTC of the 66/33kV transformers (TR-29102A and TR-29103A) are adjusted to
give higher pre-start voltage.
5) Switch-off certain loads from low priority level, if necessary.

<Additional Case-2>
1) No power supply source in QG-II (Blackout or start-up)
2) Power is feeding from QG-1
3) Several load in QG-II (i.e. necessary load for QG-II safe shutdown) is in service
4) Start the largest capacity of motors to be started by QG-1 power source for QG-II plant start-
up sequence. (Start 6.6kV, 1100kW Start-up Boiler Feed Water Pump, 29-PM9230A.)

4.0 SUMMARY & CONCLUSION

As observed from attached MottMacDonald Study Report, it has concluded that all large motor
starting simulation under normal power generation condition (i.e. 2STGs+1GTG for Train-4
operation, and 3STGs+1GTG for Train4&5 operation) with single transformer power feeding
configuration (i.e. sever distribution condition for the motor starting) are successful result and
satisfies all project requirement with DOL (Direct-On-Line) starting method.
Further to the above, even under reduced power generation condition (i.e. only 2STGs for Train-4
operation, and only 3STGs for Train-4&5 operation) from the contract requirement, large motor
starting simulations are almost successful result as follows;

Rev : E1 CALCULATION Page 5 of 5

<Train-4 with 2STGs simulation>

All large motor starting simulations are successful result under single transformer configuration
except for the BOG Compressor Motor starting. Voltage drop at 33kV bus bar is below the project
requirement at BOG Compressor Motor starting. However, since the large voltage dip of the lowest
bus bar is momentary period (i.e. approx. 82% less than 1sec), it will not lead any under-voltage
relay activation and/or release.

<Train-4&5 with 3STGs simulation>

All large motor starting simulations are successful result under single transformer configuration.

Also, for the additional two cases requested by Company specified above, simulation result were
obtained as follows;
<Additional Case-1>
As observed from attached MottMacDonald’s Study Report (para.3.4), acceptable voltage level at
switchboard voltage level were verified against starting of the BOG Compressor Motors by pre-
adjustment of 66/33kV OLTC transformer and switch-off certain low priority loads.
<Additional Case-2>
As observed from attached MottMacDonald’s Study Report (para.3.6), starting of the largest motor
for QG-II start-up sequence (i.e. 6.6kV 1,100kW Boiler Feed Water Pump) by feeding the power
from QG-1 power source has verified with acceptable result.
