Title: “Let’s Get This Bread Pin”
Original Location: None
Description/Interpreta The objects are modeled after a bread tie tag. There are a variety
tion of colors including peach, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and
purple. On each color, there is text printed in a mechanical text
that reads “$3.99 LET’S GET THIS BREAD”. There is a pin on the
back of each, so you could attach it to any fabric.

Though the price on the tag says $3.99, the pin itself sells for
$12. I understand it takes money to produce the pins, however, I
have been to many anime conventions with artists selling pins
they have drawn the art for, and sent off to enamel pin
companies to produce, for usually around $10. I saw how simple
these pins are, and then saw the price, and was shocked. The
pins are a commentary on the phrase “let’s get this bread”
meaning waking up and going to work to earn money, so you’re
working hard for this money, and then purchasing the pin, giving
another company money, to be able to show your motivation for
getting money though the pin. That may have come out a little
jumbled, but I view this as both a critique on capitalism, as well
as a money maker for the production company itself. Though
they are trying to be critical of the mindset of waking up and
going to work every day, they are also advocates for earning
money through their own business.
Use in Teaching: First thing I thought of while trying to relate this piece to
teaching is having students bring in an insignificant, found item,
possibly something that would be considered garbage, and
making it into an art piece. They could add additional elements
to it, or leave it as is and slap paint or text on it. After this, the
students would have to set a price on what they would sell the
piece for, and write a statement as to why the consumer needs
this item.

Discussion Questions:
 Have you ever seen something that you do not agree
with the price?
 Do you think there are any companies that are not
interested in profit?
 Do any of you collect “garbage” such as bottle caps,
coasters from restaurants, or candy wrappers? Do these
items have meaning to you?
