Course Title: Fluid Mechanics and Machineries

Course Codes: ME 3111(Theoretical course)-ME 3112 (Sessional/Laboratory course)

Rationale
Fluid Mechanics and Machinery features exhaustive coverage of the essential concepts of
the mechanics of fluids, both static and dynamic. It also provides an overview of the
design and operation of various hydraulic machines such as pumps and turbines. The
book also features numerous solved examples in order to help students grasp the
fundamentals and apply them to real-life situations.

Overall Objectives of the course:

This course contributes to the development of the following specific program learning
outcomes:

 To teach basic fluid properties (density, viscosity, bulk modulus), flow forces (pressure,
shear stress, surface tension), and flow regimes (laminar/turbulent,
compressible/incompressible, steady/unsteady)
 To teach how force is transmitted in static fluids
 To teach conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in fixed, deforming, and moving
control volumes
 To teach the use and limitations of steady and unsteady Bernoulli equation along and
normal to a streamline
 To teach conservation of mass and momentum through differential analysis in simple
geometries
 To teach techniques of dimensional analysis, similitude, and modeling, and introduce the
important non-dimensional groups in fluid mechanics
 To teach application of the above concepts to internal and external flows, and introduce
the boundary layer concept, lift and drag, flow separation, and drag reduction
fundamentals
 To teach examples of applications of above concepts in mechanical, biological,
environmental, and micro-fluidic systems
 To provide practical knowledge in verification of principles of fluid flow
 To impart knowledge in measuring pressure, discharge and velocity of fluid flow
 To understand Major and Minor Losses
 To gain knowledge in performance testing of Hydraulic Turbines and Hydraulic Pumps at
constant speed and Head

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) of the course

Successful completion of this course should enable participants to achieve the following
objectives:
 To provide the students with a solid foundation in fluid flow principles
 To provide the students’ knowledge in calculating performance analysis in turbines and
pumps and can be used in power plants
 Students can able to understand to analyze practical problems in all power plants and
chemical industries Conduct experiments (in teams) in pipe flows and open-channel
flows and interpreting data from model studies to prototype cases, as well as
documenting them in engineering reports
 Analyze a variety of practical fluid-flow devices and utilize fluid mechanics principles in
design
 Given the required flow rate and pressure rise, select the proper pump to optimize the
pumping efficiency
