Yoga Lesson #3 – Awaken with the

Sun

Since time immemorial the Sun has been an emblem of vitality, life and health. Many of the
worlds wisdom traditions have discovered the power of the Sun to heal disease, restore
health and increase energy levels. Yoga is no exception, and it is perhaps in this vast system
of spiritual technology where the secrets of solar energy have been most well preserved.
Yogis consider the Sun as a physical manifestation of the soul, or Atman. As such, the Sun is
offered worship, respect and reverence as having the ability to remind us of our innate
spiritual connection to ourselves, others, and the cosmos around us.
Yogis have developed many practices to harness the Atma Shakti inherent in the Sun. Of
those, the most well-known is the practice of Surya Namaskara, or the Salutations to the
Sun. This series of 12 Yoga asanas systematically reconnects human awareness to its divine
source through the infusion of pranic energy into the chakras and nadis. Each of the 12
postures symbolize the 12 signs of the Zodiac through which the Sun passes in the course of
one year. Yogis have discovered that the quality of prana emanating from the Sun is deeply
conditioned by the constellation that the Sun is place in at any given time. As such, each 30
days, as the Sun moves into a new constellation, the frequency of prana emitted from the
Sun changes and affects human consciousness in a unique way.
The frequencies of solar prana, which humans primarily absorb through sunlight, food, water,
and the breath that flows through the right nostril, are of different qualities and affect the
human brain in unique ways. Some induce states of activity, others that of calmness and
peace, while others make the mind dull and lethargic. For example, in spring when the Sun
is positioned in the constellation of Aries, there is an impulse towards creativity,
extroversion, new ideas, and a general feeling of lightness is in the air. While in the months
of October and November, when the Sun is in the constellation of Libra, there is a general
heaviness of mind, desire towards introversion, and a lack of creative energy. Of course
these are huge generalizations, as each individual responds to the solar energy differently,

however, for the most part

these rhythms seem to affect
the majority of people. Each of
the 12 frequencies of solar
prana are vital to the balance
and health of the body and
mind, and are normally
absorbed, as per each
individual’s capacity, in the
appropriate month of the year.
The Yogis who are like great
inner scientists, discovered
that though the Sun appears to
emit only one type of energy, it
in fact, has a wide spectrum of
invisible frequencies that
radiate outwards. Like modern
science, which has identified
the various subtle frequencies of the light spectrum including ultra-violet, infrared, x-rays,
gamma rays, etc, the yogis perceived and identified something even subtler. They termed
these invisible pranic currents of solar light that we receive on earth as “Surya Kalas” or the
12 Rays of the Sun. These 12 frequencies of solar light are inherent in all forms of the subtle
solar radiation, however, the proportions at which they emanate from the Sun varies
throughout the year depending on which constellation the Sun is positioned within. The
Sun’s rays absorb, reflect and co-mingle with the radiance of the stars within each
particular constellation it is positioned in. This produces a unique frequency of solar
radiation we receive on earth, at any given time of the year.

From our perspective on earth, the star fields behind the Sun change by 1 degree daily. 30
of these days make for 30 degrees, which is the size of one constellation, and 360 days make
an entire revolution of the earth around the Sun and ‘its movement’ through the 12 signs of
the zodiac.

Normally, those not engaged in spiritual practices, have the limited capacity to absorb only a
certain amount of the Sun’s pranic energy. Each 30 day cycle allows you to absorb only one
predominant frequency of sun light, and as such, whatever is absorbed must be stored for
one whole year until the Sun returns again, one year later, to the same constellation. For the
human being to function at its optimal capacity, all 12 Kalas of the Sun must be harnessed. If
after some time any of the light rays which are stored in the chakras, dissipate you will begin
to feel less vital and happy, be more prone to disease, and your life expectancy will
decrease.
To serve as a remedy to this light deficiency, the Yoga system of spiritual evolution offers us
the gift of Surya Namaskara or the Salutations to the Sun. Each of the 12 postures

correspond to the 12 Surya

Kalas which are the 12
frequencies of solar light that
we receive from the Sun as it
moves through the various
constellations in the sky. When
one performs the complete set
of Surya Namaskara using
deep pranic breathing, the
entire nervous system is
flooded with the solar light of
all 12 Kalas, thereby
revitalizing and renewing the
body and mind. In addition,
Yogis have observed how each
posture activates a certain
portion of the brain and
increase intelligence, balances emotions, and awakens the hidden potential of higher
cerebral activity.
The practice of Surya Namaskara is a profound symbol of how we are all interconnected
with the cosmos around us. With each breath it is as if we are flowing through the solar
system coming back again at the end with feet firmly grounded and planted on the earth.
Feeling renewed, re-energized and reconnected to our luminous spiritual core. In the same
way that the Sun inspires, illuminates, and invokes spiritual remembrance, so too the yogis
and yoginis move through their life enlightening all whose lives they touch.
