Criterion B and C Summative Assessment: Factors Affecting heart rate

When planning an investigation, you first need to consider your variables: what are you going
to change what are you going to measure and what must remain the same.

The independent variable is what you are going to change.

The dependent variable is what you are going to measure.
The control variables are the factors that must stay the same to ensure a fair test.

❖ Independent variable:
Choose the variable that you will change for your investigation.
The independent variable is ____________ ________.

Now decide the different values that you will investigate (there should ideally be 5).
The values for IV variable will be ______________________________________.

❖ Dependent variable:
Decide how you will measure the effect of your independent variable and the units that you will
use.
The dependent variable is __________________________. It will be measured in _________.

❖ Control variables:

Now think of any other factors that could affect the results of your investigation. Decide how you
are going to try to control each of them.

Control variable How will it be controlled? If not controlled, how could it

affect the experiment?

❖ Research Question:
Now write a research question. This should state what you are trying to find out and should
include both the independent and dependent variables.

My Research question:

Write a paragraph describing why you decided to investigate this. What is the significance of
it?

❖ Hypothesis:
Outline your hypothesis (what you expect to happen) for the investigation. Then explain why
you think this using scientific knowledge. You can do research and include in text citations for
this as you may not know much about your chosen independent variable at the moment.

❖ Method:
Write an equipment list of all of the items that you will need.

Now write a full method to explain how to do the practical. Remember to write in the impersonal
tense and in numbered steps. ALL details should be included, so that someone can follow your
method without having to ask any questions.
Are there any safety/ethical/environmental points to consider?

❖ Draw an appropriate results table into the space below and input all of the results
collected. You may also need to process the results. If so then please give examples of
any calculations that you do.
❖ Produce a hand drawn graph to show the relationship found in the data. Hand this into
me for marking.

❖ Conclusion:
Interpret what the graph is showing you accurately. Maybe quote some data from the graph to
back up what you are saying.
Explain your results using correct and detailed science.

Compare your results to your original hypothesis. Now evaluate the hypothesis. Did you prove
or disprove it. By what extent? Use data to back up what you are saying.
❖ Evaluation:

Consider the methodology used for the investigation. You need to evaluate it. Discuss any
limitations and errors that occurred. Explain how they may have affected your results. Overall is
your method valid or not? Discuss this and justify what you are saying.

Suggest improvements that could be implemented to try to solve or reduce any of the issues
discussed above. For each solution explain how you would carry it out and explain why it will
help to solve the limitation/error.

Suggest some extensions that could be carried out for this investigation. Explain how you
would implement them and why they are relevant.
