Answer the following questions:


1. Why was Rizal’s departure for Spain kept with utmost secrecy?
Answer: Rizal’s departure for Spain was kept secret to avoid detection by the Spanish authorities
and the friars.

2. What were the reasons Rizal decided to finish his studies abroad?
Answer: Aside from his strong desire to finish his medical course due to his mother’s illness, there
were three other reasons why Rizal decided to continue his studies abroad. (1) The biased and
hostile of the Dominican professor against him. (2) He was disgusted with the antiquated method
of instruction in the University. (3) The racial discrimination that the Dominican professor had
against Filipino.

3. What was Jose Rizal’s secret mission?


Answer: Rizal conceived the secret mission, with the blessing of his brother Paciano was to do the
following: Observe keenly the life and culture, languages and customs, industries and commerce
and governments and laws of the European nations in order to prepare himself for the task of
liberating his people from Spanish.

4. Why did Jose Rizal enroll in two courses?


Answer: Rizal enrolled in two courses, medicine and philosophy and letters because upon entering
the college he was still uncertain to what course to pursue but in the end he decided to sign up for
philosophy and letters during his freshmen for the reason that his father like it. Rizal also took up
medical course upon the advice of Father Ramon, Rector of Ateneo. He wanted to be a physician
so that he might cure his mother’s failing eyesight.

5. What were some Rizal’s writing and accomplishments in Barcelona and Madrid?
Answer: In Barcelona where Rizal wrote a nationalistic essay entitled “Amor Patrio” (Love of
Country. From Barcelona Rizal moved to Madrid. On November 3, 1882 Rizal enrolled in two
courses, Medicine and Philosophy and Letters in the Unibersidad Central de Madrid. He also
studied painting and sculpture in the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando; he took lessons in
French, German, and English under private instructors; and assiduously practiced fencing and
shooting in the Hall of Arms of Sanz y Carbonell. On August 23, 1883, Rizal wrote a poem “A La
Senorita” which was dedicated to Consuelo.
6. What was Jose Rizal subject for his thesis in his Philosophy and Letters course?
Answer: During his first term in 1877-1878 in UST, he studied Cosmology, Metaphysics, Theodicy
and History of Philosophy

7. What is Masonry? What is your own idea of Masonry? Why did Rizal join the organization?
Answers: Masonry consists of fraternal organizations that trace their origins to the local fraternities
of stonemasons that from the end of the fourteenth century regulated the qualifications of
stonemasons and their interaction with authorities and clients. In my own opinion Masonry is an
organization that are not related to religion and they did not discussed about politics but
freemasonry teachings enjoin morality, charity, and obedience to the law of the land. Rizal central
motive in joining the society was to secure the aid of the Freemasons in his battle against the
abusive friars in the Philippines.

1. What did Jose Rizal choose Europe (Paris and Berlin) for his medical apprenticeship?
Answer: In Berlin, Capital of then unified Germany, he met and befriended several top German scientists.
Rizal was enchanted by the scientific atmosphere and the absence of racial prejudice in Berlin. He came
in contact with great scientists. He became a member of the Anthropological Society, the Ethological
Society and the Geographical Society of Berlin, upon the recommendation of Dr. Virchow recognized
Rizal’s genius, invited him to give a lecture before the Ethnographic Society. His merits as a scientist
were recognized by the eminent scientists of Europe.

2. What were the reasons for staying in Paris and berlin?


Answer:

 To gain further knowledge in ophthalmology

 Further his studies in sciences and languages

 Observe the economic and political conditions of the German nation.

 To associate with famous German scientists

 To publish his novel Noli Me tangere


3. What were Jose Rizal experiences and accomplishments of the followings places?
Answer:
a. Paris-

 He worked as an assistant to Dr. Louis de Weckert, a leading French ophthalmologist.

 In Lariboisiere Hospital, Rizal observed the examination of different disease of woman.

 On February 15, 1892- Rizal was awarded the diploma as Master Masonry Le Grand Orient de
France in Paris

 Juan Luna – great master of the brush; Rizal helped him by posing as model in Luna’s paintings.
1.    “The Death of Cleopatra” – where Rizal posed as an Egyptian priest
2.    “The Blood Compact” – Rizal posed as Sikatuna

b. Heidelberg-

 February 3, 1886 – Rizal arrived in Heidelberg, a historic city in Germany famous for its old
university and romantics surroundings.

 He became popular among the Germans because they found out that he was a good chess player.

 He worked at the University Eye Hospital under the direction of Dr. Otto Becker, distinguished
German ophthalmologist.

c. Leipzig-

 He attended some lectures at the University of Leipzig on history and psychology.

 He befriended Prof. Friedrich Ratzel, a famous historian, and Dr. Hans Meyer, German
anthropologist.

 Rizal found out that the cost of living in Leipzig was the cheapest in Europe so he stayed for 2
months and a half.

 He went to Dresden, where he met Dr. Adolph B. Meyer, the Director of the Anthropological and
Ethnological Museum.

d. Berlin-

 Rizal worked as an assistant in the clinic of Dr. Scweigger, and at night, he attended lectures in
the University of Berlin.

 He also took private lessons in French under Madame Lucie Cerdole


4. Who was Professor Ferdinand Blumentritt? How did their friendship begin?
Answer:
Blumentritt is an Austrian ethnologist and he has an interest in the Philippine language. On July 31, 1886
Rizal wrote his first letter to Professor Ferdinand Blumentritt who is the Director of the Ateneo of
Leitmeritz, Austria. He sent Aritmetica (Arithmetic) book to Blumentritt which was published in 2
languages – Spanish and Tagalog – by the University of Santo Tomas Press in 1868. The author was
Rufino Baltazar Hernandez. Then Blumentritt became the best friend of Rizal.

5. How dark was Rizal’s winter in 1886?


Answer:

 He lived in poverty because no money arrived from Calamba and he was flat broke.

 He could not pay his landlord and he was eating only one meal a day.

 His clothes were old and threadbare.

 His health broke down due to lack of proper nourishment.

 This is one of the most memorable days in the life of Rizal.

Answer:
These are the scientists and experts that Jose Rizal met and associated in Germany.
